I have read conflicting reports on the applicability (to motorhomes) of the new (2018) VED tax which levies an additional tax of £310 per year for the first 5 years of ownership on new vehicles valued at over £40,000.

Specifically my question is - does this tax apply to new motorhomes costing over £40,000?

Have you looked on the GOV.UK web site for vehicle tax rates, it gives further details on there.

does seem to apply to motor homes:

You have to pay an extra £310 a year if you have a car or motorhome with a ‘list price’ (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000

I think the answer is that most motorhome manufacturers don't submit emission figures for motorhomes so they default to the commercial vehicle rate of £255 for up to 3500kgs and £165 for over 3500kgs. I have no idea why a heavier vehicle has lower VED that a lighter one.

    Hi David,

I understood that the lower rate was introduced for small businesses that use a lot of transit type vans.     The car tax on pick-up trucks is also lower for the same reason.    Helping the self-employed, whose tax issues have always been a grey area.

Am I right in thinking the tax costs are higher than £310 for diesel or petrol? (£450 for non EV vehicles over £40,000.)

In my case, the answer to the opening question is ‘no’.

My £48k Weinsberg 2018 registered Ducato panel van conversion with150ps engine has just renewed at £255.
