Unbelieveable price increase

We go with our friends and family regularly to the same caravan site on Anglesey every year, namely Cae Mawr. Our friends booked five days away before the fifth of December the price was £78-00. When we booked on the eighth January we couldn't believe how much the price had gone up; the cost to us was £105-00 for exactly the same five days.

As OAPs we find that a 34% hike in the price of a site with no facilities apart from service points and no shower block is extortionate.

Can I just ask the chairman of the club, does this really benefit the members of that said club? I don't think so, or are we just financing improvements to other sites around the country.

That seems an extraordinary increase in price! When are you going? Presumably you are comparing like with like so it would be interesting to read the club's reaction to this.

I agree £21.00 per night for a no facilities site is a bit steep as is a 34% price increase

I think this is the way the CMC is going, too many staff and extras to pay for.

I don't see anything happening to make it better whilst they have so many people willing to pay the annual membership and the site prices

I think the club is the best in the country, all sites I have been on have always been very well kept and an excellent standard but at what cost?

Not sure the chairman is really that bothered about the members only profit

I think a bit more information would be required before any comment could be made rather than just the before and after dates

No idea when you booked for. This may be a non-facility site but it is a very popular one and is fully booked Easter and May bank hols.

Is it worth the money? for me it is

What dates as the prices do not give the figure quoted?

"The OP did say "for exactly the same five days "M."

Exactly - which is why I called the price rise "extraordinary " !

At that time the CC alternative on Anglesey is about 2 miles down the road and is £28.30. Personally, as I like the site, I would very much prefer to pay £21.70 on a no facility site.

As the site is indeed fully booked at the current price for the BH w/e, perhaps there is someone at East Grinstead who right now is kicking themselves  wondering if it would still be fully booked had they increased the price instead by a further £1 or £2 or maybe £5 per night, wondering how much in-fact the prices have to increase before people start to vote with their feet and they find, at last, the maximum sustainable price on each site whilst still have no vacancies... I'm just glad we no longer play the let's go away its a bank holiday game. wink

We've never been to that site, but at that price, with no facilities, it must be a honeypot site, if people are willing to pay that.  Personally I would never pay that for a non-facility site, but obviously I'm in the minority judging by the fact it is fully booked for BHs.

and that is it. No one is forced to go to this site you look at the price and decide if it is worth your money, if not don't go.

Prices go up, the club as a business and not a charity can set it's prices as it wishes (see the comments from Ro for possible reasons in directory prices) if these price rises and however large do not suit you don't go. The club sets it's prices all you can do is not accept them.

But it would appear that as the site is fully booked at times a lot of people opt to go.

Btw I would never visit a non facility site but I appreciate that some do

Rowena has posted something earlier about electricity etc costs, but the price rises were brought home to me when I tried to book Strathclyde CC site for one night in July on a trip to the far north, (but before the English school holidays start).

Over £30 for one night, a couple in a solo M/H.....!!

Now Strathclyde is a (very) handy site for the motorway (as I've said before), but has little else going for it, especially at £30...??

I will carry on a bit further and wild camp thanks.....

I've said it before, the club can/will tailor it's prices to fill its sites, but the point must be coming when many people start to look around for alternatives. This year we are using a much greater mix of private/CCC/wildcamping than ever before....

It’s  highlighted just how wrong the Club got things in terms of it’s price increase estimates. One party book a pitch before 5th December, and will have that price honoured. The second party booked after 5th December when the second price increase had been decided, and so it shows just how much extra prices have gone up in a single year. Price of electricity supply they have given as the main difference. Never found sites in that part of country cheap, be they CL, Club Site or Commercial.  Anglesey is a bit special, with prices to match.

Totally agree with your sentiments. We joined the other club  about 15mths ago and have used them more than C&MC in that time.

Anything over £25 a night even in high season we won't pay and in low season it has to be under £20.

The way the club has expanded the school holidays to take in both the Scottish and then the English school holidays disgusted me a few years ago and the feeling is still there. You mentioned that the price at Strathclyde was over £30 but it was before the English school holiday,

I'm afraid the schools up here break up 3rd week of June so the prices go up just before then and don't come down again until September despite the fact that the schools open again around the 16th of August.

Yes, the Club will obviously look around for any excuse to raise their prices, and as has been said many times, if people will pay them then that is exactly what I would expect them to do.

And some times, at some sites, over 30 quid, even for a non SP pitch might be worth paying. But I'm not paying it for that site, that night. I'm voting with my feet.

The Club has some cracking sites, and sometimes some good prices. My experience in 2018 was that most of it's sites were full when I visited. I wonder if 2019 will be the same...?? It will be very interesting to see what effect the price rises have on occupancy levels.

Am I right in thinking that increased site fees = increased profits, and these in turn = increased dividends to the company shareholders?

    So who is benefitting?

Schools in Scotland break up about two weeks before England as noted when going to the southwest in early July as Hillhead was like little Scotland last time we went hoping to miss the English school hols starting

Redface, after running costs and wages etc most of the money goes into the club refurbishments and purchases, Rowena explained this in an earlier post.

There are no actual company shareholders as it is not a limited company that has issued shares. The additional cash is supposed to go towards upgrading the sites but perhaps finds it's way into the pockets of those employed by the company.....maybe that's who's benefiting!

The news from local tourism people is that many will choose to stay in the uk next year due to uncertainties over the EU so there may well be pressure on some sites next year. Last year the SW had record numbers of visitors.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and suggest that the OP might be mistaken in what they say (I'll be more than happy to apologise if I'm wrong by the way!). I was so staggered by the suggested price hike that I did a little bit of research.

I'm assuming the  £105 quoted is for one of the Peak periods to start with and I've just checked in the old handbook where 2017 prices for pitch and 2 adults was £20.10 per night. So I'm not quite sure where the figure of £78 comes from if it's also peak periods.

I'm not in any way implying that the OP was deliberately trying to be misleading, but it might be useful for them to come back on with details of which 5 nights they and their friends have booked.

I stayed at Cae Mawr a couple of years back. At the time I thought it a bit pricey for a no-facs site. I noted that the local CL's are also exorbitantly priced. I shall not be returning to Anglesey any time soon.
