One of our favourite Winter bolt holes, but sadly BA is closing early this year, before Xmas rather than after. I can't find any mention of why, so just wondered if anyone else had heard anything?

We have booked Hawes as an alternative, never been although we have passed Site a few times and know area quite well.

Wonder if they are planning work as it is usually full over Xmas and new year

It may be something to do with the access road - B6160.  We were due there in just over a week, but had an email last week advising of the access road being closed between the Devonshire Arms & the Bolton Abbey Village car park from 10th Sept for 4 weeks.  Rang the wardens on site who confirmed we would not be able to get through directly from the A59.  The recommended diversion is to go via Skipton, Grassington & Hartlington I think and approach from the opposite direction.  Not a good route to be towing a caravan!  I think they also mentioned work later on, so that might be the reason behind the early closure.

Also be aware that the A59 is now open between Harrogate & Skipton but single file at Kex Hill I believe.

See my post about this same Skipton/Grassington/Aysgarth route on this. It was fine with a small caravan.

We came back South by the same route on Wednesday afternoon, and found the signs advising road closure by Bolton Abbey quite confusing, they appeared fairly unsure of themselves, as if they'd been moved out of the way, so we carried on in hopes. A tractor driver I asked just N of Bolton Abbey advised that the road is currently closed on some days, but nobody round there is quite sure when these days will be. He reckoned we'd be fine getting up a single track road West from the road closure if need be.

It was indeed closed when we got there, and that little single track road across to the A59 was our saviour. I'd not want to tow a large van up there, though, and was grateful not to meet another van coming the other way!

Thanks for this. I couldn't find anything on the webpage, but knew about the road works. Club did advise it was a one off this year when I contacted them. Hope so, we like this site in Winter. Off to try Hawes instead, so something new to enjoy!smile

Ttda just been looking at Bolton Abbey site for a possible visit , noticed the closing date for next year  is 4/11/2019 . Did the site usually stay open until the near year?

Yes it does. When I asked they told me this year was a one off, so that's very disappointing. We had two December breaks there a couple of years ago. Busy at weekends.
