Gear Box Issues in Italy

Hi All,

This is our first post on here so hopefully I'm posting in the correct area.

We are on our first European trip in our motorhome and are having a few issues selecting 5th gear. We have made it to Lake Garda in Italy but it's going to be a long slow drive home at 45 mph in 4th gear.

I was wondering if anyone might either have some advice on how to rectify the issue or perhaps recommend a trusted local mechanic they may have used in the past.

The motorhome is a Machzone Silvermint based on a Peugeot Boxer 320 1997. Gears 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all good. 5th just won't let me select. This issue started with it jumping out of gear after letting of the accelerator. The belts were a bit noisy but don't think that was related. I did get a bit of a graunching noise on start-up after about 700 mile point but could still get all gears.

Any tips, advice or recommendations that will enable us to continue the trip would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Mike & Adi

I very much doubt you can rectify the issue without major work.

I assume you will have European breakdown insurance such as Red Pennant and your best bet will be to contact them. Failing that, contact a local repairer.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. It appears to be a common issue with a poor design of the fiat ducato gearbox. The 5 sipped box is derived from a 4 speed with the 5th added to the side. The result of this being the oil doesn't reach 5th gear cog as well as the others, so it looses synchro. It's currently in a local garage being repaired. Hopefully it won't cost too much or take too long.
