Safefill gas bottle

just want to share my experience of safefill gas bottle, l have been looking at them for a long time now and have always put off by the price tag at £150.00. I managed to find one for sale on gumtree for £45.00 for the 7.5kg bottle which was only 6 months old so bargin. My local service station was fine with me filling it up, it had some in so l topped it up which cost me about £4.00. Our first trip was 2 weeks in France, we had 2 weeks of using the cadac via bbq point oven and hob etc and we had 2 nights running the fridge on gas. When we returned home l popped to the local service station to top the bottle up to see how much we had used. I was shocked when it only took £2.37 to fill it back up again. I only carry this one bottle in my gas locker now and it fits a treat. The saving to be had with this bottle is great. Check them out for yourself.

HELP!   We purchased a Safe Fill and cant find anywhere in the Derby area where we are allowed to fill it.  The 2 Morrisons nearby don't stock lpg and the Shell garages are a definite NO!  We're off to France tomorrow.  Currently without gas.  Does anyone know any stockists near Derby or on route to Folkestone?

The issue I found is not identifying outlets that sell LPG, it is far more finding ones that "permit" the refilling of portable cylinders.

Probably a bit late now but Safefill do a list of filling points that you can download onto google maps.  Not saying 100% accurate but has phone numbers to check.   Derby seems to be a bit of a lpg desert tbh.

mylpg.com has a 'verified' attribute against its LPG site listings, members add the date/time they last successfully filled, providing real data...

to the OP, if you're still struggling, a simple 'butane' hose (21.8mm LH thread) will fit many French gas bottles and they are cheap at supermarkets...

Big moves forward on Safefill refilling.

Have a look at the Safefill website. They have announced some months ago that they have new refill partners in the form of  "Morissons" service stations. Also see on their site, amended "Red Guide" PDF document to allow user owned filling gas bottles on forecourts. This is a huge step forward, service stations realising now there is a growing income being lost from user owned gas bottle filling, I suspect it won't be long before others join them.

Safefill is "fully safe" to use and extremely light. I have used one for 8 years now and bought an extra one beginning of this year. I did enquire by email with Safefill about bottle recertification after 10 years and was advised that that was not required when used in the leisure/private sector.

That’s the July 2017 PDF which still states that Sheet 26 will be published shortly. As far as is known, it hasn't been.

Have you not seen the other thread where it was discussed in depth?

I have filled up, when I needed to, at almost any filling station that sold LPG. BUT, I first went to the operator and explained that I have a proper refillable bottle and invited them to come and see it. Most didn't bother but there has never been a problem.

I bought the adapters for France and Spain at some not cheap price, but have never needed them. Gas does go a very long way except if you are on a 6 amp hookup in the winter and the breaker on the CL is rated at about two amps! They won't be catching me again!

Well done Lee. £45 is indeed a bargain. Wish we could all find one at that price. I wonder who was selling though? Why would you sell one and particularly at 6 months old?? Anyway, whatever the answer, enjoy your new found freedom from high gas prices. I hear to new Red Guide is now published so things are getting better all the time for Safefill users.

That’s great to know David. Always looking to help folk save money and improve their caravan experience!🤣🤣🤣. Yes, refillables are not for everyone but the more I talk about them the more I realise that not many, in relation to how many ‘vanners’ there are- even now- know about them. Amazing I know but forums such as this certainly help to inform and educate. The problem is of course, not many use the facility! I have got a problem with my alarm at the moment and so I have posted my query on the forum- I’m sure someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

Hi just back from touring in the uk been out since March just staying on basic cl sites no ehu using a Safefill bottle for gas and a 160 watt solar panel not had a problem filling up the safefill anywhere apart from one occasion at a shell station, regarding the basic cl sites we have not paid more than £8 a night must have been around £4 to £6 a night but have noticed a lot of the new basic sites opening are asking around £10 a night, talking to a lot of the owners they have said that the club keep telling them to put up their prices but they have said that they have seen an increase in numbers over the last two years because of the solar panels this begs the question why are the club trying to get them to put up the prices

On your last point I would imagine its is perfectly sensible for the Club to suggest a reasonable per night price. A CL charging £6 a night will only gross just over £200 a week if full. Being a basic CL its unlikely to be that full across the season. Unless the CL is a hobby it would seem hardly worth bothering. I expect the Club are keen to keep as many CL's as they can open and I wouldn't be surprised if those charging such ridiculously  low prices will be the first to give up if the owners think its no longer worth bothering? Finally I don't think the Club are actually telling them to put fees up but probably advising what a sensible per night price is?

have noticed a lot of the new basic sites opening are asking around £10

£10 sounds reasonable to me. If I had a small paddock area to accommodate 5 vans I would expect to spend a couple of hours every 2 weeks to mow it with equipment that I had provided, time sorting out bookings. Non facility sites are less popular and so if I am mowing, have two units at weekends, a disposal point for waste and water to maintain then why would I consider it worthwhile if I charged less?

Back to the discussion about SafeFill cyinders and filling them up.

I have the 11kg version of these excellent cylinders fitted into my self built motorhome.  I decided to fit one of these rather than having an underslung tank from the likes of Gasit or similar on the grounds of saving weight.

However two of the problems I experienced were:-

    1. Having to remove it from the cupboard it is fitted into each time I needed to refill it.

    2. Most especially when touring France where it is illegal to fill a stand alone portable cylinder and in the UK where in real terms very few LPG filling stations actually allow their refilling.

So to overcome these problems I made a simple modification and fitted an external filling point along with a simple modification to the pipe to the cylinder.

The modification I did was suggested by the owner of Gasit who sell a wide range of valves and fitments.  OK it cost me a few bob to carry out the modifications, but here almost 4 years later the combined convenience and far lower prices has resulted in a far easier life when out touring throughout the UK and France.

This year we have been away for 10 weeks during with not one night on EHU and yet we have only used £10.20 worth of gas smile

They are seperate fill and take off points. At least one of the filler adapters sold for use in other countries than the UK is also equipped with a non return valve which has in the past caused me grief when there has not been enough pump pressure to open it.

No idea about Safefill but Gaslow certainly has and I assume that is the case for Gasit and Alugas.

Of course the SafeFill cylinders only have a single entry point and despite me writing and indeed speaking to the man at SafeFill suggesting they ought to consider getting the cylinders manufacturers in Norway to manufacture them with 2 entry points, of course nothing happened!!

So I made contact with the very helpful boss of Gasit and came up with a system where I have a panel mounted filling point which has a length of hose on the inside that has a on/off lever valve fitted into its lenth and then beyond that a 'pigtail' which I attach to the tank before I go to a LPG filling station.

It's a bit of a faff doing so, but it is safe and it works perfectly and I have used it throughout the UK and Europe.

If and when I build my next conversion, next time I will fit an Alugas tank as it comes as a fully finished unit https://www.autogasshop.co.uk/alugas-ce-11kg-single-cylinder-kit-1279-p.asp

    OK, here are 3 x shots: -

    1. The first one shows the external door of the fully sealed but floor drop out vented cupboard.

    2. The top of the tank where you can just see the standard regulator attached to the top of the cylinder.

    3. The lever open/close valve along with the high pressure hose which is attached at the other end to the Gasit panel mounted refilling point.

As I explained before, all I have to do when I need to refill the cylinder is to turn off the top valve on the cylinder and then remove the regulator and then screw the filling hose into position.  Then when tightly attached, the valve on the cylinder is opened along with the inline lever valve.

When the tank has been filled it is essential to close/shut the lever valve and then the valve on top of the cylinder before swapping the hoses over........ JOB DONE

Certainly a bit of a faff Milliemaster but if it works for you - Great. The fact here is that you are getting much cheaper LPG so that is what it’s all about.
