Route to Tenby

I will be travelling to Tenby on Sunday Aug 19th. I an trying to select the best route. The A465 heads of the valleys road is closed in both directions so that leaves the A449/M4 or the A40 through the Beacons. I'm towing a caravan. Whats the best route?

    The Green Man Festival is on in Crickhowell so best stay clear.

    I'd say A449/M4 much better route even without the festival.

    I would think both of your alternative both routes would be ok The M4 could be very busy at the weekend but if it's running ok it is a more direct route with a caravan rather than up through the hills.

    Agree. We live just outside Tenby and it is always a toss up between   the HoV road or the A449 / M4 route when heading in that direction.. With all the road works recently on the former, we have tended to go the other way.

    The Green Man festival has swung it to a definite A449/M4 - thanks for your help.

    Local knowledge. There are no scheduled closures of the A465 HoV  road this weekend 17th/20th August.

    I was wondering as our daughter drove that way, and back, yesterday and she saw no notices to that effect. We will be travelling to Stratford from Tenby next Tuesday so I was interested. I know that the last time we went (about 3 / 4 weeks ago) the road was closed at Brynmawr - there were notices of the closure as we approached the Neath / Merthyr turn off on the M4, so we travelled via Newport / Monmouth.

    Looking at the road closure website though it is very confusing and reads as if the HoV is still closed. Maybe that's what the OP had in mind?

    The new flyover at Aberbaden (Gilwern) is now open, the sliproads were closed for resurfacing but all open now. Caravan traffic for the Green Man Festival directed that way. I have checked the road closure situation because we are travelling West on Sunday for a week at Freshwater East.

    Thanks for that. I think we'll go that way on Tuesday to see what's changed.

    Hope the weather improves for your week at Fresh East. It's a bit gloomy here today.
