If all you do is HS and warm weather touring you'll probably survive with a decent SUV. For anything else, get a proper 4x4. You can stay anywhere, anytime then without worrying. Make a few new friends, hauling others out of mud baths........laughing

All I can add is that I have a Tiguan Bluemotion with the intelligent 4 wheel drive.  Last winter I was in N Yorkshire and got up some snowy hills when lesser cars failed so assume the 4 wheel  clicked in and did it's stuff.  I am normally a fair weather caravanner so would not expect to need the 4 wheel capabilities; however, when I towed with a front wheel drive car I often experienced wheel spin starting on gravel/grass inclines, don't get that with the Tig.
