We need a decent couple of nights stopping in our caravan in the Hexam / Corbridge area for a relation's birthday gathering at the end of the month. EHU and showers needed this time.

Such reviews of the local sites, for example, Hexham Racecourse, Fallowfield Dene, Wellhouse Farm, that I've found so far are at best from last Summer, and all are mixed or worse. Mostly they're of the "could be lovely but let down by poor maintenance" variety.  Has anyone been to these or others close by.... haven't found that many of these others yet! ... and able to give more up to date info please? I'm hoping at least of  them  has improved on what I'm seeing.

Thanks for any help.

Both Hexham Racecourse and Fallowfield Dene used to be Caravan Club sites.  There was a third but the name escapes me at the moment though it was to the north.

    Changed days!

We have used Hexham Racecourse a few times down the years. The ladies shower area was ok, the men's ropey! But it is a lovely site. We drove in and drove back out of Fallowfield Dene, found the pitches too close together, no privacy. Of the two, we would use Hexham Racecourse. The Hadrians Wall area is like a black hole for the Club, nothing there relatively close.

We joined CCC at Haltwhistle Site for this very reason. We were only ones on the site at the time, it had been flooded (it was late Autumn). I recall it being nice. There are some good CLs around, but not sure if they have showers. Hope this helps a little! It's either put up with not so good showers, or drive in from further afield!smile

The one to the north was, of course, Fallowfield Dene.  The third one was Townfoot Slaley. This was in the times when, as a members' Club, sites were provided where members needed them - in the case of Hexham, as stopping points on the long north/south trips.

Thanks for these replies. I agree the area seems a bit of a black hole for sites!

Following advice on the Caravantalk site, we've booked Bellingham C&CC site, despite its being 20 miles from the birthday gathering. On this occasion, a good shower is an important feature!
Another time we'll try the CL's, maybe.

Interesting comments on both Fallowfield Dene & Hexham Racecourse sites, these mostly agree with some reviews I've read elsewhere on both, evidently they've not changed, though your comments on Hexham are more favourable than I'd read!

I think you will enjoy Bellingham HH. We have only stayed once, some 30+ years ago, back before it's days with CCC. We rolled into Bellingham quite late one evening in our little camper van, looking for campsite signs. Nothing, no signs at all. So we asked a farmer who was leant over his gate watching us. He chuckled, said you have found it, but he had taken in the signs as the Tax Man was due a visit! Brilliant! It was a staging post on Pennine Way, lots of proper campers and walkers. No idea what it is like now though, under wing of CCC, must be much larger.

Hexham Racecourse is a stunning location, but wild when the gales are blowing. The toilets/showers are in the visitors stands, probably same used by jockeys! Last time I was there, camping with my sister, the Ladies had been done up, a lot nicer, but the Men's hadn't. It was one of the old Trax Racecourse Sites, the Club was in partnership with a few at the time. We have also stayed on Wetherby, Wincanton, Market Rasen, Fakenham and Exeter Racecourses. Love the space and the locations. Some are still on the go. Have a good time at your party!smile

Too late to be of help now but Sweethope Loughs CL has toilets, showers serviced pitches and is lovely (apart from the one night we had loads of midges). I can't remember exactly how far it was to Hexham and Corbridge but we visited both several times
