How do you know or claim they are full?

I am not blind CS. I can read the site full signs as well as observe their status as I walk or drive past.  Unfortunately the Club's report for 2018 won't be available for some time to prove either of us right or wrong and by that time this converstaion will be long lost in the archive. I have made a judgement from what I see, yours is different. Oher members who have been out and about on a bumper summer no doubt have their own opinions as well.

This weekend is a bank holiday and for  the Club to be doing will,  I would expect to see very few sites with availablity over the holiday, especially in holiday hot spots like  Devon and Cornwal.

I see 15 sites in England and Wales with more than one pitch availability over the forth coming weekend of 3 nights. I presume cancellations prior to 3 day deadline have been submitted by now.

I make it 23 ET, cancellations must be coming in thick and fast! Add in Scotland and about a third of the network has availability.

Very few sites seem to have the whole weekend apart from the Sat night  where those who have been all week go home on the Sunday,or arrive on the Sat for the week or more and there are if counting? lots of sites that have no pitches at all as they are not listed, and the West country and has finished for the summer, until the seniors resurface and Scotland does not have a long w/end until Novenber

Judging by Malvern, sites this BH are doing OK. When we were there in early August, the best it achieved was two thirds full on one weekend night. More generally it was less than half full. This Saturday there are zero spaces, and that's without anything major on at the show ground. On Friday there are 10 paces and Sunday 1, out of 204 pitches.

Presently 16 sites in England and Wales that have more than 1 pitch availability over the three days (Fri,Sat,Sun).

Did you miss the fact that I was counting those with more than 1 pitch available perhaps PD?

For me one pitch available is close enough to full and would please most site owners I suspect.

Am I missing something here? The OP was complaining that he couldn't book sites because they were full at weekends (in general,  not just BH weekends) and here we have claims that sites have too many vacant pitches at weekends? undecided

PD - we spend a lot of time in Cornwall in summer, around the holiday hotspot Perranporth & Newquay area and I haven't seen a single "site full" sign at any site at all this year, so I'm not surprised that there are vacant pitches this weekend.

was that in peak season M?

Some of you are very defensive about Club sites.  But let's face facts.

Here in Cornwall it's been packed with families all summer, helped by A30 road improvements, good weather and the trend for "staycations" - but the number of vacancies on Club sites over the summer here has been an absolute eye opener.  Club sites here are simply not attracting families. And I am not surprised.

Yes - that's where our static van is. We actually drive past 5 large sites every day to get to Penhale Dunes to walk the dogs and not one has had a site full notice up at any time this year. We also often go to Holywell Bay to walk, passing 3 more large sites and again, no site full notices.  In fact one of them delayed opening this year until May. Can't speak for Haven Perranporth Sands though, as we avoid that like the plague! wink

See my post above, et - Cornwall has indeed been very busy in August but most of the larger sites have had touring  vacancies all through, at least around our area.

Club Sites are in the main, just somewhere to Site a touring outfit. Lots of the holiday parks with lots of family activities are destinations in themselves. Somewhere to go as a destination rather than to sleep. I know of some folks who use such, but never see much of Cornwall itself. It's down to the individual to choose of course. In the past, we have used a gorgeous cottage sited on a very nice holiday park. The cottage we used, along with the other privately owned and converted barns were booked privately. But we got to use some of the holiday park facilities at a reduced rate, if we wanted to do so.

Can you see something we don't ET? Have you been looking day by day? month by moth? How do you know what the number of vacancies are? At best it will show less than 5 pitches or full (I assume it did not when you checked?)

But that is not the point either, the real proof is the occupancy rate compared to other non club site.

That's right, afterall, pitches can only be sold once so one van staying 7 nights is the same as, for example, three different vans occupying the same pitch over the same number of nights. As you say, it's occupancy rates that's crucial.

The club is a network of nationwide touring sites not a one off single destination and that's what appeals to many members I'd reckon.

I left a Club site on Saturday which was only half full with only a handful of arrivals due that day. The non Club site I went to was full.

You keep your rose tinted specs on QED for me

Yes, in order to make meaningful comparisons and pass constructive comment we really do need to consider all the facts before making assumptions.

I didn't walk round and count the empty pitches, half full was an estimate but it certainly was not a few. Would it really make any difference to your views if I named the sites involved? I doubt it, they are too clouded by those rose tinted spectacles. You either believe me or you don't.

From what I can see from being out there and not sat at home speculating, where I have been, there has been no problem getting a pitch on Club sites.

Shouldn't that read "on some sites"? I've experienced the opposite when trying to book "some sites" during bank holidays and fine weather weekends.

    Just a thought!smile

You are probably correct if you just want the odd day midweek. However, in this threads title is weekend, and that is a totally different matter. This year for various reasons, we had to cancel what we had booked off peak and were instead away in July / August. We wanted a week or more at a site and that significantly limited choice.

It wasn't always the weekends that were full either, often odd weekdays. To me that indicated that a lot of the sites were operating near capacity.

I don't disbelieve you PD I simply discount you. Without knowing which site your post is an irrelevance as some sites will not be popular.

Indeed, Malvern for instance was less than half full midweek in early August. Cirencester and M in M by all accounts were much nearer capacity.

They are obviously not popular because they were by no means full! The Club clearly hasn't got its marketing right or there had been a lot of cancellations over the weekend.

If the clubs (both) sites  in certain less popular areas were not "full" then it would have been, in context, the same at commercial sites,in the same areas

I passed 2 C&MC sites today, both were heaving with folk, yet a commercial site close by had tumbleweed blowing across its roads. Don’t ask me to name them as I will be evasive. . . .Trust me I don’t fib🙄😗😗
