Hi all,

We are thinking of purchasing a Hobby caravan as we like the look of them both inside and out. However I have heard they are not allowed on some sites and that there might be some stigma attached to them. Could anyone clear this up for me please?

Thanks in advance Jon

Are you talking about a Hobby van designed for the UK market or a huge twin axle 8ft wide job with the door on the 'wrong' side?

With the former you’re not likely to meet any problems but you might with the latter.

And with the latter your find it harder to hang on to, "very desirable" to certain communities..

I made another comment regarding the towing vehicle which someone has edited out. It did have some relevance and is a point to be considered.

There are some sites in the UK that do not accept Hobby vans at all. Fendt, Tabbert and buccaneer are also frequently mentioned. Flamingoland is one example - it's buried in the T&Cs

We tow a German van but not a hobby. We tow with a pickup. Nearly all my non-club (either) bookings have to be done over the phone because of the no commercial vehicle rules that are frequently found.  Having said that we've not had many problems finding sites. I've not come across many sites that ban specific makes of caravan but some certainly do.

    Hi Jay,

I tow a '17 Hymer 580GL with my '14 Hilux Invincible, never yet had a problem ( this is my ninth German 'van ) and don't envisage having one. Though there are some " sad little people " out there.

    Happy caravanning.
