Stop that litter lout!
Yes, it is painfully obvious that we Brits are awful at keeping our environs clean and healthy but is this the best way to go? Are there better approaches to this filthy habit?

Have the manufacturing & sales industry remove the use of all packaging for items where possible. My grandson just opened his Easter egg, the amount of packaging was ridiculous and totally unnecessary. What a waste of time money and the environments resources not to mention rubbish now in bin..

Agree there's far too much unnecessary packaging.
Out of interest has anyone heard/seen in the paper/witnessed in court a prosecution for littering? We had a couple of instances mentioned in the local paper years ago about cigarette butts when fines were introduced or upped. Nothing since. Just looks like 'they're' doing something 😤😭

Reply button greyed out, copied checked thread and its not there, pasted reposted and low it's there twice.
One day, one day this site will work well 😂. After all it is April Fools Day and before noon. However clever the IT staff must be to get that programme written 😉

Increasing fines on it's own will stop nothing. The fly tippers and litter louts need to be caught. then punished. It is not a job for the police, it's the responsibility of the local councils..One suggestion is :- Use the thousands of unemployed to patrol designated areas and report the registration numbers of fly tippers to the council. There are other methods of catching litter louts. Just needs the councils to get off their backsides and take action.

Blame the council, too easy and a lame get out in my opinion. They would also need the support of us Council Tax payers to use our monies on this problem or additional ring fenced funding from central government. How many of us would agree to this? Oh, and then the unemployed are 'implicated' by some association it seems! No matter how we look at it 'we' are the problem.

This is not an April fool but an idea to reduce an ever growing problem.
Change the colour of poo bags to bright pink - hopefully the guilty parties might think twice about cluttering our town and countrysides if the bag was always visible and not semi camouflaged.

Plymouth have introduced "litter patrols" (environmental enforcement officers) with on the spot fines and it's apparently starting to work. £13000 collected in the first week. Driving past Plymouth on the A38 is one of the worst areas I have ever seen for roadside litter.

My local council employ a company who are supposed to enforce both litter and dog poop rules. It's a nice little earner for them. Unfortunately I've not heard of any action against dog owners but there are lots of reports of people being fined for dropping a single piece of paper or cigarette end. There were 4 cases in court last week where once you add on costs to the fine is over £400. In the same reports that's more than some people get fined for assault or theft. Clearly littering is considered a more serious offence.

It doesn't help when certain motorhomers and caravanners themselves dump their rubbish as a number of semi permanent parkers unfortunately do, in a quiet cul de sac, just off the coast road, not far from where I live. As a motorhomer myself, it infuriates me as we often get tarred with the same brush and of course it encourages others to do the same. Late last year a brand new motorhome parked there overnight and next morning there was a large KFC box dumped outside the door. Next day the motorhome had gone but the KFC box was left behind. Why leave it as they would have been passing numerous rubbish bins so could have simply put it in a bin?

Was there not a report recently of a lady being harried by an employee of one of these Private Anti - Litter companies. She had had the brass neck to tip a piece of grit out of one of her shoes and not put it into a litter bin !! Disgrrrrraceful !!

Driving south on the A1 last week, the nearside verge & central reservation was full of litter ..... loads if it. I can think if places at home that are just far enough from local takeaways that their food has been eaten & the boxes get thrown from the car windows. If councils/police had wanted to do something about it they could've made a start a long time ago.

Careful what you wish for! I detest littering, of any kind. A lot of LAs now have Public Space Protection Orders in place. A good idea if they were managed correctly, with well trained staff able to educate, and monitor as well as issue fines. Sadly, most LAs tend to contract out, and some of the companies are very nasty indeed. The prime motive is to punish first, get the cash in to pay for the contracts, and there is a lot of bad feeling and unnecessary tension created in how these pspo's are managed.
Personally? The fines are not great enough, should be a lot higher. But employ sufficient people, train them properly, and do away with the "for profit" mentality.
The underlying problem with most anti social behaviour, littering, dog poo, drinking, speeding, spitting, swearing, driving while phoning,etc...There is no longer enough staff around to have a presence to deter it. Not enough staff patrolling streets, parks, local neighbourhoods, roads. And when was the last time anyone saw a policeman patrolling a town centre? All ours are busy arresting tree loving pensioners, and home owners trying to protect their homes from fracking!

Plastic poo bags dumped at the side of footpaths is litter - who mentioned dog fouling?

I've heard it all now. On tonight's news one person interviewed suggested that school should be primarily responsible for tackling the issue. Yes, they should play a part, an important part in my view, but one that is secondary to parental and societal support and action backed up by appropriate funding and fines.

At this time when most/all local councils are facing cutbacks in services, raising spot fines for littering gets my vote. Actually enforcing it is the hard part as most of the litter in our local country lanes is thrown out of cars on the way home from a night out.

I think that was in Devon, the BBC also interviewed a few people about litter problems and one interviewee, in the process of dropping a cigarette stub, explained that if she didn't drop it council workers would be out of a job with no streets to clean!!

Courts should be using community service awards as well as fines, get the offenders out cleaning up, eg using a phone in car, big fine points and 100 hours litter clearing!
Make the drunk louts who go on the rampage in a lot of cities at weekends clear up their mess if they are arrested.
Long term unemployed. some of whom are better off on the dole, should work for their benefits
