Cmax 1.0 EcoBoost as a towcar ?
Hi all, I am looking to change my Ford Cmax 1.8 125 bhp in the near future. It has handled my caravan well in the past. It is near its limit but all has been safe and legal. Unfortunately Ford don't make this engine size anymore but the 1.6 has now got 125 bhp and a torque of 159 Nm. I have been looking at the EcoBoost 1.0 which is supposed to give us 125 bhp with a torque of 170 Nm. Has anybody experienced towing with this EcBoost engine. It sounds to me to be ok if not better than the 1.6. I did ask my dealer but he wouldn't commit himself saying its best to ask the Caravan Clubs advice. So please any advice would be welcome. David

I may be terribly old fashioned but fail to see how a 1L engine can be expected to tow a caravan. OK at certain revs the turbo may produce high torque and BHP but will it achieve sufficient oomph at low/normal throttle.

Personally, I wouldn’t entertain the 1L for towing. I wouldn’t be overly keen on the 1.6 either to be honest.

Thanks for your replies. They are the same as my thoughts really but I just wanted confirmation. I was more than happy with my 1.8 and am disappointed that Ford no longer make this model. I have just realised that the 1.6 petrol will only legally tow 1000 kg which is no good to me. So it is looking like the 2.0 diesel is favourite. The reason I have gone with the Cmax is I am limited by the size of my garage. The Cmax only just goes in with a towbar fitted so anything longer wouldn't be suitable anyway.
Any problems with buying a diesel nowadays ?

The 2L diesel wins hands down! I’d go for it.
I suspect diesel cars are depreciating more than petrol at present but needs must where towing a caravan is concerned and no one ever claimed it to be a cheap hobby. The depreciation situation, if it exists, could just as eaily change at any time.
