    BB

Thanks for the report back. Where I got stuck was the inability to add the little image file which as you say is no longer an option. There is also a limit now on POI file size so something like Archies has to be loaded country by country which fortunately Archie does allow for. I hit a problem with loading the data file so must have another go!

Has you chewing the carpet, doesn't it. After numerous abortive attempts with the MacBook - TomTomHome interface for me, I dug out an old WinXP machine out of the garage and after two hours I had an updated map downloaded to the USB stick. Off now to load it in the MH. Wish me luck. Not sure if I dare trying POI's.

NB. One thing I noticed was the inability was the inability to make a backup of the "Uconnect 5" Radio Nav" - this is not supported in this model.

CY, like you I have two older machines, a One and a Classic XL which both use Tomtom Home...

with these machines, you can see the file system (on My Computer) and dragging the POI sets (all in one go) from a Windows documents folder onto the Tomtom map is one sweep of the mouse.

if you're interested, I have all the latest Aires, LPG, cc, CCC, sites and CL/cs, ACSI etc all neatly named with pretty icons....and am happy to let you have them and to chat about loading them....it really is very easy.

im guessing you need to do the POI add and then take another copy of the updated map onto the USB....seems far easier than considering uploading POIs to the van unit retrospectively...

    cheers BB.

David, the size limit is 2 mb for a .ov2 file, I fell foul on the Camperstop one....I've had a quick look to see if I can chop it in half, but I need to work out which 'data' is needed as a header and trailer for each new smaller file....

once all the POIs are on the unit, it's just question of making a logical split into upto 5 categories (I did ACSI, LPG, cc, CCC, Aires) and a (boring) process of assigning a colour to these....

my aires files (to keep them small enough) are by country so a bit more fiddling...

BB, DK, AD have any of you looked at the Aguri?  we have been looking at the Aguri 720 which says it has all the ACSI, C&MC, CCC etc preloaded and has a built in Dashcam all for £259.99. Just wondering if it would be good value.

hi TG, don't know much about Aguri, so can't really comment.

would be good to know if they have a sensible process for POIs as these change all the time, with sites closing/opening etc, especially CLS and Aires...

also, whilst GPL stations are pretty popular in France and Spain, it's always good to know where you might be able to fill...

yes, we all have Internet access (most of the time) but not to be relied on...

Having done all this donkey work with POIs and setting up traffic and hands free (and the fact that I can plan a trip on my iPad or iPhone and upload it....) I'm going to give it a few trips....and it was only just over £100 for a 6" screen....

perhaps im being a bit grumpy as I don't see the latest front end as progress.....said the same about the latest Transitwink

Cheers BB, Phil has had some sort of success with Garmin and TomTom in the past but it would appear I have lost the Garmin surprised we had it last year at some point. When we went to get out the vehicle at a shop I put it away (allegedly) now 'we' can't find it.

We still have the TomTom but its an older model and no longer has the lifetime maps on it.

We looked at a Falcon satnav while at the Glasgow show which like the Aguri has everything preloaded, however no dashcam built in and a bit more expensive.

I would just like one that has everything like C&MC, C&CC, Acsi, Archies on it so that I don't have to listen to him having a meltdown when he can't load anything to it laughing he would like to have a dashcam and satnav all in one so its one less thing to have to plug in and sit on the dash. Anything for an easy life these days I get enough grief elsewhere don't need it when we go away, just want nice and stress free touring.laughing

TG, had I not managed to get this one really cheap, I wouldn't have bothered....my old Classic XL will still do the job, but as you say, the maps will go out of date...

i have a 'full Western Europe map' on there and backed up, and my last download said I had to load one of their three 'subsets' as the new full map was too big...

so i thought, OK I'll go for the one with the graphic showing the U.K., France, Spain and Portugal on it and give it a try.....after the update, I found the graphic was wrong and it didn't actually have the UK on that bit....DOH!

so, I just restored back to the previous back up.....

however, in ferreting around on the Tomtom forums (a lot of folk not happy with lack of decent POI management) I came across this comment...

"I seem to be able to do what you want. You have to use TomTom's web based MyDrive and not MyDrive Connect. If your POIs are synched, click on the menus and choose one and then its pop up menu "use as starting point" and for the destination "plan route".

The software is not easy and I have not seen a manual specifically for using MyDrive"

I think the above suggests that you can connect (say) an old device (the poster had an old XL and was moving to a new GO) and 'sync' back to MyDrive all the POIs held on it, and then connect the new device and 'sync' them forward onto this...this would be far easier than the 'one at a time' method.....and might retain the original .bmp POI images which will get over the problem DK and I were discussing.

incidently, there are multiple apps which are now making all this confusing....

obviously Tomtom Home for the older models but the later ones interface by the MyDrive App which is available for Apple or android.

now the confusion...the latest Windows interface for updating non-wifi Tomtoms is a different App called MyDrive Connect which allows for software and map updates....

but this is not quite the Windows equivalent to MyDrive....that is found by clicking the Route Planning button in MyDrive Connect which opens the web version of MyDrive.

you can go to the same page by opening a web browser at www.MyDrive.tomtom.com

i couldn't get to this page yesterday without advice from Tomtom helpdesk.....undecided

this is the only place to manage POIs, albeit clunkily, as iPads don't support the files or the functionality...don't know about Androidundecided)

how on earth do non IT literate folk make sense of all this?

    Tomtom Home is so easy.....

DK, hope this helps rather than confuses......

Thanks for your kind offer BB. My problem is that the satnav is built in so I can't plug it directly to a PC to manipulate it. On uploading the map from the USB, I noticed that it appeared to wipe the previous map prior to uploading the latest. It also deletes all the files from the USB at the conclusion of the exercise so I don't even have a copy of the map other than the one in the MH satnav. There is no facility to make a backup of the system either. It does make one rather nervous.

I don't make a great use of POIs, so prudence suggests to me that it might be better to just have those on an app on the phone or iPad.

Well, I've tried again to try and make the best of the poor POI handling and eventually got them all loaded and colour coded as described earlier....

however, when in 'normal' map mode they can be seen, as soon as you use the search facility and it returns the map view of the selected place, all the loaded POIs are missing, negating the reason for them being there....IE navigate to one I can see on the map....

not only that, when synced, the POIs on the unit can't be seen by MyDrive.....so, no workaround there....

i did think I might be able to live with this as I can use the normal map mode, although, without search, it takes much longer to find unknown places.....

i also thought I might make use of the MyDrive app for easy (non POI) navigation, but in testing this I have found that putting in my local golf club (as a test today) it places it a mile to the west of here when it is, in fact, 4 miles to the east!

it does the same with the search on the unit itself!

so, I thought I'd go to Halfords and take it back.....so I put in Halfords, Wells as the search and it placed the shop at least 200m beyond where it is, in an adjacent street.......

    Hmmmmm.....

back to my old Classic XXL with the out of date map.....but upto date POIs.wink

the Tomtom forums are full of complaints about the removal of the old way of managing POIs, they've definitely dropped the ball here.

i am a big fan of both my two old devices (other than out of date mapping) but I'll wait now until (if) they get their act together on a future release....
