Volvo v40 T3
I have been towing a small Adria around 1100kg with a SAAB 93 1.9 TiD and found it a really good tow car but as it has over 100,000 miles on the clock it’s probably time to replace it. I’m feeling a little guilty driving a diesel and thinking of going over to petrol. The Volvo V40 or XC40 auto with the T3 engine has taken my eye. The problem is my present car tows a dream with a torque figure of 320N/m but the V40 has a reduced torque figure of 250N/m. Does anybody have experience of towing with a V40? Or a petrol car with similar torque figures.

For the same reason of diesel guilt I'm contemplating swapping our V70 Volvo diesel, which barely even notices our van (up to 950 gross) behind it. I'll be interested to see what comes up on this thread.

I towed a 1400 kg Swift with a Volvo S60 with the T3 Petrol engine. No problem but you did need to be in the right gear for hills.

I have an XC70 and before that a V90 petrol, best tow cars going, towed with a big Volvo for 28 years, However, when my XC70 goes in for service they lend me a V40 RDesign, which I would not tow with, far too light compared with your Saab.
Its not just the torque, its also about the weight of the car against the van, but I have noticed the bhp on these new small Volvos is pathetic.

That's interesting - there's no way we're going to upgrade, but I had wondered if a smaller 2nd hand Volvo might still do the job.

Thanks for your replies. I dont think the weight is a problem unles I’m missing somthing as the SAAB kerb weight is 1495kg compared with 1432kg of the V40. The full laden weight of my van is 1100kg well within the 80% recommendation. Good to know that Martyn6073 tows OK with the T3 engine but I still worry about such a small engine 1500cc.
