Are diets any good, or is it just best to eat less? (Speaking as someone who has been left at home for too long with the Christmas cake, spare mince pies and festive chocolates.....wink)

I'm on one now, just eating less and doing more is all that's needed. No need for these fancy ideas.

I think most people socialise more at Christmas and New Year and that leads to an increase in food and drink. So unless you make an effort to up your exercise levels (and shopping doesn't count) then you are bound to increase your weight. I don't see any harm in this if you then regulate yourself back down to pre festivity level and you shouldn't really need to go on a diet, which is not meant to be a lifestyle eating regime but something to readjust your body weight.

Anybody who is worried about their weight and their BMI should already be taking steps to adjust it regardless of the time of year, it's just that tradition has it that January is going to be the month that cures all. It usually does't because the cold make you hungry. Lose weight by evaluating your whole regime.

Good post 'Wherenext', my problem is not at Xmas but from October through to March when I am at my laziest. It is during this time that my food intake remains the same but the dogs walking distance becomes less, and I tend to take the car for short distances rather than walk in cold, rainy weather.

During better walking weather I can eat whatever and whenever and exercise generally keeps my weight stable and acceptable. It's just that January 1st seems like a good starting point for this.

Time away from home is my downfall when it comes to eating too much. Although we do much more cycling then when at home, we tend to eat more bread, cakes, biscuits and ice cream frown so we always put on around 5 lbs usually we remove this once home and back to our normal diet.

If I have to reduce by more (just now) I tend to return to my Slimming World eating healthy plan. Everyone is different but it suits me and I have in the past reduced by a stone. One of my other big problems is the OH, he has no will power and just doesn't get it when I say NO we are not allowed that (usually cake or chocolate and sweets). As I only rarely drink alcohol for me its not a problem but OH does like a glass of wine or a B & C.

I don't believe it he has just walked into the room with a handful of popcorn yell

    Good luck bruewink

We do Slimmingworld as a couple.  It also works very well in the caravan as well.
