We are considering buying a Roku box, it is like Google Chromecast but unlike that it will authenticate through the CMC internet, which means we can watch stuff (rugby mainly!) from B T Sport on my tablet on the telly. Wondered if anybody else has successfully used it when touring?

Hi Redkite, I have used the CMC network to watch rugby on the tablet and that was ok, what I want to do is stream that to the telly. It will also mean we can watch TV when abroad.

The CMC system doesn't support streaming, it's essentially for web browsing etc.

Because the majority of sites are remote from anything other than long bt copper  telephone wire, feeding what coul be up to two hundred and more "houses"in a "little village " the streaming of programmes and the such will  severly restrict what is available, as is the same that thousands of people in permanent villages villages arround the country have been having trouble with for years, there is no diference

I often measure the internet speed on Club sites and I have not found many that offer a speed of above 1Mbps download even on Gold Standard sites. Whether this is deliberate throttling back by the system I don't know. With that level of speed I think you would struggle to stream successfully even if it were allowed.

You could try streaming with a MiFi system or tether the Roku to your mobile phone 'both using 4G, but be prepared to use up your data very quickly.

The amount of data used when steaming, depends on the demands of the device that you are streaming to. We haven’t used our TV for about three years now, preferring the convenience of an iPad, commonly fed from our mobile data allowance - when available. The data consumption per hour of TV streaming to a mobile device is around 225Mb. So a monthly allowance of 10Gb would provide over 40 hours viewing. Which is more than adequate for our own needs, especially since we both have 10Gb allowances.

I use a Roku using my iPad as a WiFi hotspot. I have a healthy data allowance and have never run out of data. We do not however spend hours every night streaming programmes. It does also require a good 3G or 4G signal.

i have just recieved a MiFi unit frm 3. £8 per month for 10gb data at 4g. if you already subscribe to netflix you can use the unit to stream from there and will not come of your data allowance. connect up to 10 devices and Go Roam in 60 destinations aroud the world at no extra cost ( with something called Feel At Home )?? when tested got 50mbs download speed. not bad for £1.85 per week. free unit and free delivery.
