The scrap yard is a farm BB. The road a track through the Chatsworth Estate that you can use to walk into Baslow, through the back gate. Odd bits of road along its length, but not suitable for turning into an exit without massive expenditure, even if Chatsworth estate agreed. More logical would be an exit along existing roads to the gate house by the Sheffield Road  roundabout. However, this would increase traffic in the park and an agreement with Chatsworth estates is unlikely.😉🐖🐖🐖😬

It’s the Estates’ Maintenance Yard and there isn’t an exit road around the north of it, besides, the 12 foot ancient stone wall separating the yard and the site reception area might be a problem.

Also, the exit road you are thinking of heading north to the village is right through the park grounds and whilst isn’t used for the main vehicle access to the house, it is only occasionally used for staff access or for access to specific events the house may be hosting

Along with the residents of the gatehouse property, I am quite sure the estate would not want caravans and motorhomes using this road that goes straight through middle of the deer park, even if it were posssible to get around the maintenance yard, which it isn’t, because of the big ancient stone wall that happens to be in the way. Also big white boxes streaming out along this road would be one hell of an eyesore to the park and would ruin its beauty.

Having just looked again on Google to what your are referring to BB, that’s a narrow stony footpath for the most part, which passes directly in front of a cottage on a bend and then further in to the village, passes a house and a row of thatched cottages. No way can this be converted into a single track road. Would never get past planning, let alone the Estate.

What makes anyone think that the occasional user of the site can have an influence on the estate structure. Get used to the way it is or don't go there.

    Blunt, but true.

A few inconvenienced caravanners and motorhomers isn’t about to change the agreement the Club have in place with the Chatsworth Estate. The Estate will be the one laying down the criteria of the lease, it wont be for the Club to amend for the benefit of its members. No doubt the Club has to work with what is offered and its not for the Club to dictate to the landowner

Anyone advocating that the arrival/departure arrangments (or any other aspect of the agreement with the estate) at Chatsworth should change should just bear in mind the changes over the past few years at Longleat and the detrimental effect that's had on club members using that site.

What has happened at Longleat? Never been so have no experience of the place but would be interested to know.

I can picture it now, CAMC hierarchy adorning begging cap go to the Cavendish family with a proposal along the lines... we’re very grateful you let us lease your land for our caravan site and we hope the rent payments we make to you, make you happy. However, some of our members are a little annoyed we have to impose arrival/departure rules on them so can you please spend a few £million or so building new roads so we can make our members a little bit happier.

You can imagine the response tongue-out

I understand the problem of access to the site via the long narrow lane has come about since the running of estate was taken over by His Graces son? as it used to be via the main entrance and down the hill in front of the House but he stopped access to the cc site via that entrance i think the same time as stopping access the grounds with dogs?

Easy solution :- Anybody not liking the CMC rules on arrivals at Chatsworth site.  Just don't go there. Go elsewhere. tongue-out

Most customers just follow the sensible rules and arrive as per advised -- No Problems.

It's not the CMC at fault. It's just a few of their selfish customers who think that the rules that everybody else follows  doesn't apply to themselves.

    cool

    Exactly.

And the lack of enforcement of the arrival time rule across the entire network has come home to roost at Chatsworth.

Same problem as anywhere else in society.  The spine road through our housing estate is supposedly a 30mph limit. We've lived here 26 years and I've seen a bobby here with a speed gun once. Virtually nobody takes any notice of the speed limit at all.

Unless you enforce a rule rigidly, even seemingly "decent" people ignore them. Fine if you are not really that bothered about it, but of course it causes problems in places that you are bovvered.

K, never been there, and as its generally only those who 'frenzy' that can get on it, that wont be us.

sometimes, not having a 'tainted' view of an issue can help resolve it.

however, as im never likely to join that particular queue, either, ill leave that to those that enjoy these things...

    happy (continued) queuing, allwink

When the previous Lord Bath handed over the management of the estate to his son a "management team" was brought in. Instead of using the main entrance, past the front of the house, which must have been one of the most memorable access routes to any club site, entry was changed to the back lane, previously just used as a departure route. But more significant were the access arrangements to the estate itself. You used to be able to stroll around the grounds direct from the site without purchasing an "all inclusive" ticket, in fact without a ticket at all, just like you can at Chatsworth at the moment. This was particularly good in the evenings after the crowds had departed. Now, as I understand it, you have to purchase a ticket to enter the estate grounds during the day and it's closed off in the evenings anyway. As for dogs, forget it! They're not allowed anywhere in the estate at any time. frown

So be careful what you wish for as far as Chatsworth is concerned!

Why bother with rules then if not enforced. As far as arrival times, just turn up > if you get on OK if not go and wait somewhere else. Not rocket science and after all you are on holidays.

Had agreat weekend at Chatsworth second time here first visit was our first time in a caravan. Same as last time meet and greet went well he remembered us, all staff are very friendly and helpful as far as the stags and rutting it makes for great photography. We did two walks from site 6 &14 miles we will try and book again next year. And the getting on site problem some are having just go for a drive round and when you come back it will be clear, that's what we did last Friday.

Why did I think that these Stately Home sites were all arranged by the part of the aristocracy that patrons The Caravan Club, under terms of the Old Boys Network rather than commercial leases?

    Nigel,

It is so lovely to hear your positive comments about your stay at our Chatsworth Park site.

The comments about the youthful campers in their (mainly) VW's was also great to hear.

I am also very pleased to hear about the warm welcome you received from the wardens there.

Thanks so much for taking the time to praise our site staff and for writing such lovely comments.

    Nicky,

I too am glad Nigel had a good time at Chatsworth, and it is great to see a staff member on here commenting on the thread.....

As I'm sure you have gathered, this is Nigels second thread on Chatsworth, and much of the theme of both threads has been the "problems" caused by early arrivers and the "bow wave" (queues) caused by people booking in.

Is there any comment from "staff" on these matters, I notice you have avoided that issue in your reply, this may well be of interest to many members, not just those that patronise Chatsworth...?

I notice from another thread that there has been an announcement on Facebook of a "booking review".  Might this address some of the issues....?

    Hi Tintent,

I wanted to say how lovely it was to hear such positive comments from Nigel.

With regard to those that arrive earlier than 1pm, I have to agree with DavidKlyne, our moderator.

We cannot monitor what happens outside our sites and we always make sure Members are aware of all arrival times when we make their bookings.

As another poster said, it is not hard to drive around for a while so as not to arrive too early.

    Take care, Tintent.

(I will not be on CT for at least a week, just to let you know)

You’re welcome Nicky, it was an honest review and whilst the arrival rules will always be an issue for some, Chatsworth remains a very pleasant site located in a great area. We will be back there next year.
