Hi everyone,
There's a consultation to improve on the proposed changes to the tolling scheme, which could see more users receive unlimited travel across the Mersey Gateway Bridge and motorhomes designated as vehicles in Class 2, the same classification as applies to private cars.
The consultation runs up to the 29th March 2018 so only a couple of days left to share your views. Members of the public are invited to read through the full consultation document and share their views.

So I might as well also mention the M8/M73/M74/A723 upgrade that is now nealy complete. Three lane motorway made up to four lanes - PLUS HARD SHOULDER. None of this "smart motorway" stuff.

They are in England if you are over sixty or have certain medical conditions. What Wales did not have, at least in September last year, was access to the 111 service.

Yes I have, although it was for my convenience. I did have a choice of many other routes through London to cross, all free.
We had a free bridge as well and then they built an excellent new one which we have to pay for. No objection to this (barring the fact that all major infrastructure should be centrally funded and not run to raise capital) and it is an excellent piece of engineering.
The issue is that they then decided to charge for the existing bridge as well, this was bought and paid for decades ago so why should I have to pay for it now. For what reason have they decided that a public owned road can now charge for its use other than to direct the traffic to their new shiny pocket lining bridge. Disgrace.
There is no choice traveling between Mersey and Cheshire, Tunnel 1,2 or bridge 1 or 2, now all attracting a toll.
The desertion of Merseyside by the many companies using the M56 corridor has already started, this will destroy local industry.
Good Infrastructure increases prosperity and should be centrally funded to the benefit of all. Using it to raise money is detrimental to the economy and negates the purpose of building it in the first place if the overwhelming reaction is relocation of the business that it was built to serve.

Interesting report on Granada news tonight that a motorist appeal has been upheld and toll charge and penalties may not be legal. Council is appealing and will be heard in May but will not suspend charges or penalties until appeal heard.
I will watch with interest.

Yes just also been reported on the BBC, one guy was saying that the council will have to pay back the charges to commuters and it will run into the millions of pounds.

Toll motorways seem to reduce congestion on the French motorways. Would it do the same here if a similar tolling system was introduced for our motorways?

Most traffic congestion on the M25 was at the Dartford Crossing, and for miles each side due to tolls, until they removed the booths
7.5 hours in a queue one Friday evening was my record trying to get home 
The Tyne Tunnel has the same lengthy queues daily.
As do the Severn Crossings and the Tamar Bridge.
Chaos ensues at holiday times.
BTW queues on French motorways are considerable too, at the toll areas. Go skiing to the Alps and you'll see how gridlock works, regardless of having a tag, or in summer peak. You have to sit in traffic to get to the tag lane
It would be useful to have one system that covers a country, or a continent and not require pinch points if such tolling was necessary. Or why not have one 'tax' on fuel and do away with different penalties for using the roads

Yes French autoroutes do have their moments and pinch points. Particularly at French holiday time weekends. Our sat nav was giving an ETA 8 hours in the future for a 100 mile journey. ☹️ Needless to say we exited at the next junction.
Much of the reason for the lower traffic volumes is the size of the country and number of roads of all types, for a similar population size. (Both 65/66million) Around areas of high population the autoroutes still get busy. Lyon can be fun.😂 The areas of low population density in the U.K. Don't have many motorways, so comparisons are somewhat flawed.

Just letting people know that the Toll for Motorhomes on the new Mersey Gateway Bridge has been REDUCED to £2.00 (£1.80 if you have a pre-paid ID Sticker.
