...although we go 'a long way' we only 'eat the elephant in small parts'..
4 hrs from ferry to first stop...St Bernerie en Retz
1.5 hrs to second stop...St Jean de Monts
3 hrs to third stop (here)...La Couarde
1.5 hrs to next stop...St Georges de Didonne
2 hrs to (probable) one after that...Saint-Emillion
then two 1 hr ambles onto well sited aires along the Dordogne
before reaching our first 5 day stop....
so, we dont do any long distances (very often)
for perspective, we are (broadly) as far from Cherboug here as i would be from home to (say) Kendal, and i wouldn't (attempt to) do that in the van in one go....although when i was working (and had to visit Kendal regularly) it wasnt uncommon to go there and back in a working day....

The reason I ask, dear boy, is that you seem to spend an inordinate amount of time "over there" on CT - 4 separate sessions today I think (you see, I really am "overly interested" in your trip!). Surely there must be better ways to spend your time "over there" - or maybe it's not all it'scracked up to be?
Still, as I said earlier, each to their own!

M, this is starting to become a bit unnerving....
...logging my every post, checking their timings against my actions .....in order to do what....,make some pathetic point that 'over here' isnt all its 'cracked up to be'...or whatever thats supposed to mean?

ive told you before, im not on holiday (and don't have to chase around, with dogs, or whatever it is you do all the time) im just living here for a bit.....taking my time, chilling out, theres no rush to do anything.....is there? Ive got many weeks to do as little as i like....thanks.
youve obviously missed the point....doing nothing is most certainly an option and if i want to post on CT while having a cuppa, i will...

I can assure you everything's certainly alright with my being over here, other than you keeping an unhealthy watch on my 'doings'...

When we were going "over there"recently we found it was better and nearly as cheap as to go long distance overland by train,as I still get some very good concessions on numerous continental railways,so just need somewhere to stay on arrival

We used to go to France every year. Always South of a line drawn across the Country from La Rochelle. But our last and very nice stay was in Benodet Brittany.
Our current reluctance to travel that far is due to Health and medical requirements AND the exchange rate. I am used to getting about 130 -135 Euro's to the £ and cheap diesel. But current rates dictate staying in England.
Sadly I doubt now that we will visit France again. I will spend my cash in the UK.

well maybe it is just the caravan/MH holidays. Speaking from personal experience and with those that have jut come back, package holidays and all inclusive seem to be as popular as ever. Maybe it is not worrying about exchange rates affecting the price you pay for petrol or sites and just paying a set price to cover your holiday upfront.

David , regarding your lack of HGV's .My brother drives for various UK companies whose entire fleets are registered in Eastern European countries, something to do with taxation I guess .So whilst you may not have seen them , it doesn't mean they are not there.

We have decided against overseas holidays on cost grounds because of the Brexit effect. I suppose one day sterling may recover against the Euro but probably not not in my lifetime.
So we are looking forward to renewing our acquaintance with the quieter parts of the UK; if they still exist.

For more years than most we have visited a selection of European countries every year.
Sometimes we see, at most, one or two GB stickers on sites, many times nil...I can't say it has recently changed except in Switzerland a few weeks ago there were 6 or 7 on one site!
Perhaps that's the exception that proves the rule

But as has been stated before ,we are likely to be most of us, the last generation that has the disposible income to do as we please when it comes to our leisure time, and still enjoy? the enviable position of not having to think if we can without the use of relying on plastic/loans to pay bills

We were in Slovinia and Austria in June this year and didn't see hardly any Brits on the sites we were on.

We took the ferry to Santander early June this year. It was busy, mainly with retired people, many with caravans or motorhomes.
Landed in Spain and meandered to St Malo, over 7 weeks. Hardly saw another Brit car on the road, or on the campsites. Where did they all go? The ferry back to Portsmouth was again busy.
Maybe everyone is giving us a wide berth......😱😱😱😱

ok, ill give you that theyve both had a fair chunk of it to help them along the way (son's new apartment in Bristol for example) but if you cant help your kids......?
my parents (age late 80's) and OH parents (age early 80's) were the first real generation to be home owners.....that 'wealth' will find its way to our kids,too, eventually......
