Best route to Wareham Dorset from Chorley Lancs

We are going down to Wareham in a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone could recommend the easiest and fastest route, there appears to be 3 routes (via Bristol - via Southampton or via Swindon)

    To avoid the congestion around Southampton you could try M6/M5 to junction 25, then A358/A303 to Yeovil junction at Cartgate. Head towards Yeovil on A3088 and take the A37 to Dorchester where it's an easy route to Wareham. 

    Junction 25 is about 1hr from Bristol then 30 mins to Yeovil in normal conditions.

    Personally I would favour the route via Southampton using M6, M6 toll (with CC discount) M 40, A34, M3. Good service stops on M6 toll, Chieveley (A34/M4), Sutton Scotney A34 and Rownhams as you join the M27.

    I can't help with a route as I come from the East (just like other Wise Men), but all the Dorset coast is wonderful and Wareham/Weymouth (cute 50's style pier) /Kimmeridge Bay (fossil beach) and Corfe Castle/Lulworth Cove (crab sandwiches)and Durdle Door (fascinating chalk cliff formations) in particular are special favourites for me.

    Finding parking for my m/home is a bit tricky but Wareham is lovely for browsing and the town quay (car parking on the quay) is a glorious place to sit with an ice cream or a shandy outside the Quay Inn pub or take a boat trip up the River Piddle (yes, that's really its name).

    You'll have a great time.

    I see my efforts to encourage travellers to glimpse Yeovil have failed again. So close to Dorset we can smell the apple cake.

    When we go down from the Wirral in our motorhome, it's Cirencester, Swindon, Salisbury, Blandford Forum. It's a route we know.

    Interestingly, if you put in Chorley to Dorchester on Google it brings up the M6/M5 junc 25/ A37 route. Wareham is only half an hour from Dorchester but other routes make this longer.

    My brother had a house at Worth Matravers so we know the area very well. On a Sunday afternoon and evening during holiday periods the traffic getting off of the peninsula is terrible. We used to leave at 10 pm to avoid it. Plan your return carefully.

    I would avoid the M6/M5 route as there are now roadworks near the junction that are causing horrendous traffic buildup, listening to Midlands News. Have a look on the AA or RAC websites to see what the traffic situation is. The local news is continually telling travellers to avoid that area.These roadworks/Bridgework are scheduled for many months.
