We tend to select sites for their location and ease of access to public transport which tends to rule out some of the more remote sites. However I hasten to add that I don't think the sites we shy away from using are bad it's just they don't meet our requirements.

Ferry meadows....a combination of being met by the rudest of rude lady wardens ever, quite upsetting, to a pitch that 3 units around us found it hard to walk around 1 even drive around, he constantly drove through the gap between our pitch and next doors, over the cables etc. he was challenged but just laughed and said ok then carried on, we had the children with us and decided to make the most of the terrible place and left a day early....those 2 people plus the fact not a lot to do in the close vicinity make it a place never to return to.

Agree wholeheartedly. Yet Cherry Hinton so regularly full even though there are more pleasant sites around the city at both Comberton  and Great Shelford

The train was not running the days we were there. We like to walk to as many places as we can local villages etc. We walked to Peterborough.... that was a long one unless we took a wrong turn, lots of nice open space for dog walking etc but just not for us. We do do a lot more research now before our trips since getting a motorhome but I think the whole experience from start to finish just put us off and it's always a case of " do you remember when we went to ferry meadows.....never again" a different day, and different people on site would probably have made it a whole different experience.

With all the info coming out on this thread, I think it will need to be made a sticky so I can cross reference any potential future booking against it......!

In the UK we stay on sites that are convenient with either public transport or bike access to the points of interest.

Next week we are in Bath and Oxford for a few days each......so no CC sites!

With such a small proportion of UK sites we only visit one or two CC sites out of ten or a dozen each year. Most of out away time is in other countries.

I have stayed on the site several a number of times. In the last 12 years probably about 3 times. Never had a problem with pitch but there are a number that I would not like. Simply the exit as above.

Do not tend to have the "problem " of access to public transport since "seeing the light" and returning to a c/van so all sites are conveniant nowwink

It is one we have been meaning to visit, a good winter distance from Nottinghamshire. When I checked it was about 3.5 miles into the centre of town. So a reasonable distance, but OK for us at the moment, so we must visit soon. As far as problems with wardens / others, personally I would not let that affect my opinion of a site. They are almost certainly going to be different on the next visit.

Last time I stayed there I was walking better and did stroll into Peterborough for a pint. Visited Nene Park two years ago from another site and had a pleasant walk around the lakes.

As I mentioned earlier, just goes to show how diverse our likes and dislikes can be! We love remote, quiet, no facility sites, the smaller the better. However.... we decided to visit FM a couple of Winter's ago, we were well outside our comfort zone, it was Feb half term, so very busy, huge site, full on facilities, close to large urban area.... Yet we really liked it! It was peaceful, a great price and loads to do. Nene Park on doorstep, steam trains running, brilliant dog walking, great for wildlife away from main country park paths, cycle ride into Peterborough was very easy and interesting, and we explored out away from site to Ely, Fotheringhay etc.... some days we left MH on pitch, others we spent 10 minutes packing up and went out. We shall be going back in Winter. But not in Summer!

I agree wardens do not bother us we only usually see them to book in but in this case it was a string of events starting with the warden that put us off this site.

Chatsworth dark and dingy, borrowdale dark and dingy, park coppice consisting , dark and dingy, troutbeck seems every van has three dogs and dated facilities and the noise of motorbikes next door, treamble valley packed in like sardines and it was worse this when I walked through, yes there are a lot that we give wide berth

PS I wonder how many would go the chatsworth site if they bricked that gate up. Oh I forgot longleat, now it looks like a car park went their several times all grass pitches, freedom to walk around the garden ect would not go there again either.

Yep Chatsworth not for me. Cannot recall Borrowdale. No problem with Troutbeck. Longleat off my list also as it has nothing to offer for me

    Cannot recall Borrowdale

It used to be called Low Manesty.....

Superbly located on the path around Derwentwater but the approach roads around the lake can be a bit narrow and awkward......

No toilet block and virtually all pitches under heavy tree cover. Very damp every time we've been and the hardstandings weren't proper gravel, sort of a more firm mud than the rest of the forest, unless it's changed lately.....

Some severe de-forestation and a toilet block would make it one of the clubs most popular sites....wink

I remember the Borrowdale site now. Long narrow road from a bridge over a stream. I went there at the start of my last caravan holiday with my wife and youngest daughter. 7 weeks of sunshine. Would have been July 1995.

An odd question. A lot less I would imagine. We like the site and don't recognise your description, but would not go if access was withdrawn through the gate. We like to walk from the site and leave the car, walking back down a mile of entrance road dodging traffic, before you could start a walk, would be no fun.

I agree to an extent about Longleat, not the car park bit, but the freedom. Now you have to pay for a ticket even to walk through the park, it severely limits walking from the site. We may make a return visit, but not until we want to pay to visit the lions or something again.

I really don't choose sites for their attributes its more to do with location and how these fit our tours. Also, those city sites mentioned tend to be full most if not almost all the time, so they must have some appeal. To be honest we use them as places to sleep. As for cost, York for example provides security along with usual standard facilities and the cheapest 24 hr parking for a van, awning and a car right in the city centre.

There are such a variety of sites on the network and the appeal of different locations is what attracts us. We may not be so keen on a couple of them and there are others we probably wouldn't ever be interested in using but the choice of locations is pretty good.

I am very much the same, it is the tour route and areas that we look for. But there are some sites that I find an alternative to. Cherry Hinton is one purely because of its exit.
