    This need for local housing is a myth. The youngsters leave and have left the countryside in every developed country. Its been going on for ages. Here in our village a council/housng assoc house  came vacant. Despite the teeth grinding by the politicians they could not find a single local person who wanted it. ( This was not some big run down estate but a small terrace of 6 properties). Likewise the old properties the second homers brought were not required and would have fallen into decay Unfortunately the youngsters of today have far too high a bench mark. First home needs to be detatched, fully furnished, C H  Garages etc. whilst we were happy to start low and upgrade. Instantanious is todays benchmark.

    That may well be the case in your area Fisherman, but around here there is a huge waiting list for affordable local housing.  It is not a myth here!!

    I think it's very unfair of you to suggest that "the youngsters of today" need to have fully furnished, detached houses, with central heating and garages!!

    The youngsters of today in this area are more likely to want a rented flat,or "apartment" if you to be posh ,as they seem now, to be shying away from the costs of home ownership, as they now appreciate ,you need to be mobile to get work and renting is far easier to move with your jobs

    Back on "subject" we do not have a "tourist problem"in the rolling hills of Hertfordshire as apart from several "Big Houses" we are thank goodness the county as we are so close to London, 23 miles to Kings Cross,and every one "passes through" via M1,A1M,A10,M11  we get missedwinkcool so our lovely little villages are still available to USsmile
