Battery charging by car

When connected to your car and engine is running does the battery automatically charge or does the caravan master switch need to be on?

    It should charge when the engine on the tow vehicle is running,as the fridge should also ,as long as it is turned to "batt" symbl there has been "problems" with some modern cars with "inteligent" alternators where they do not think there is a need for the extra power,
