Hi

I need to replace two tyres on single axle coachman Pastiche 2004.

My local tyre centre chap says he has a stock of tyres that people have changed after a few years to comply with caravan insurance.  He says he has checked them and in his opinion they are fine

£30 each.

Quite a saving my insurance doesn't mention tyres any advice re pitfalls with used tyres?

Thanks

People change caravan tyres because the are out of date. Would you eat out of date food?

Tyres have a date code so they probably changed them as they are over-age for insurance purposes.

If they are 'old' they may look o.k. but the sidewalls may well have deteriorated with U.V. sunlight. I wouldn't trust any tyre fitter's opinion when it comes to my or more importantly my loved ones lives.

You wouldn't be so pleased with the saving when you're standing by a blown-out or flat tyre on the hard shoulder (or worse) even if it wasn't raining hard.

Would you really risk your life and that of others by using someone else's cast offs that are probably already beyond their recommended 5-7 year age limit?

I don't believe changing tyres is an insurance issue but one of common sense. I'd use a different tyre depot rather than one where the staff try to pull the wool over your eyes.

So ,how many people with cars over 5-7years old have replaced their spare wheel ,which probably have never been used !!!

i would suspect that most of the blown out tyres that the link Milo has posted had either been under or over inflated

Changing tyres after 5 or 7 yrs is only a guide ...... a tyre doesn't come with a use/sell by date.

Fitting 'used' cast off tyres means you would be taking a considerable risk, you have no idea as to their history of usage or treatment. Because the weight of the caravan is being carried by only 2 tyres, compared to your car with 4 tyres their reliability is even more important. The cost of new is worth every penny.

But you have no idea of the previous history of tyres fitted to a used car. It could be argued that you can at least view the inside of a used tyre before fitting, something you can do with a used car.

I'm sitting on the fence ...... wink

A car spare is usually in the boot or under the car so not likely to degrade so quick and not standing for long periods with weight on, so imo no comparison.

My caravan tyres are being changed later this year , no sensible offers refused😱(outside the recommended use period )....... I have been advised they should be renewed by my service engineer , he sees &  checks hundreds every year & I trust his judgement & experience...... No if or buts .

£200 for peace of mind .....it's a No brainer .....unless you like to gamble 👍

PS ......my nephew is a Traffic cop , he tells me 90% of caravan incidents he attends are tyre related ....you decide
