We are due at Southport next week for the best part of a fortnight, had to change from Minehead due to family problems, and not having been for a few years now am looking for a bit of advice.

With the additional pitches are there still areas to avoid? Like to get evening sun, when it decides to arrive, and prefer not being under trees. Other than that we are pretty flexible.

I'll be watching this as we're up there very soon.

Anything to the right of the entrance, if you go left it's a narrow dead end which is not a very nice area.

Not sure of the sun direction...is there not a map somewhere in the Southport site listing?

There are various websites and phone apps that will tell you the sun's direction for a given time, date and place. One is http://suncalc.net/#/51.4,-1.317,12/2017.06.15/10:55

or use google. The sun cal one shows you the direction as you move the time slider and it's super imposed on a google map. They won't of course tell you if trees are in the way! You could ring the wardens before you arrive?

It's quite easy to work out the sun at Southport. The Irish Sea, or should I say the beach adjacent to it, sits not more than 400 yards or so from the site. This is WEST.

The new area is quite open so sun seekers could end up there. This is also the place where the Service pitches are. As Natasha says, anywhere to the right of the entrance is probably best.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Right hand side on entry it is then. I never have a problem with the way the sun will be - I we use a compass if we can't decide or it hidden behind the clouds 😉😉

Thanks for the comments, just couldn't remember how shaded the pitches are with foliage etc.

Lack of Sun was the least of our problems when were there last year  ...... poxy loose gravel hardstandings are useless when trying to keep an awning pegged down during high winds ..... I gave up in the end, screwed it up in a ball & carefully threw it into the back of the car.

MM, was this on the new pitches? We had the same problem at Stonehaven the year it opened, but it has been fine since it all settled in.

Yes, very near the toilet block.

The more I'm obliged to use HS pitches, the more I loathe them.

Have endured some very high winds this week (pitch 175) and other than one peg pulling out we have been fine. Just a pity after the first 2 scorching days the weather hasn't been the best☹️

If you want all day/evening sun, suggest new part pitches 110 to 125 but, because that part of the site is open to the elements it can be rather breezy.
