    That's a bit of a naughty post JCB. Putting up a picture of another place would be lying, and I have no reason to lie. I had to reduce the photo considerably in size to get it to post on here, the original had the details included and a larger view of the location. Thanks ValDa for confirming. It is a shot of the hairpin, only cars involved.

    Towing a caravan up Sutton Bank would be relatively easy given the right circumstances:

    1. The driver knows the road well.

    2. The driver is experienced at towing.

    3. There are no other nervous drivers impeding progress.

    4. The towing vehicle has sufficient torque/pulling capability for the outfit being towed.

    5. The road conditions are good.

    NY Police/Highways will have looked at these factors, weighed up the risk and decided that the probability of having all these factors in place for the majority of time is low. Shame that they haven't banned HGVs over a certain tonnage as well, would save locals a lot of grief.

    Well, I have towed a Sprite Major up Sutton Bank with a Series II Land Rover quite legally so it must have been some years ago.

    The signed "alternative route" is unsuitable and the caravan traffic is not popular with those who live along it. I did hear that the prohibition would have included HGVs had it been possible to get them along the alternative. One plan was to divert them as well but only allow alternate directions on alternate days!

    I know this road very well & whilst it is perfectly easy to tow a glider trailer up the bank ( they are much lighter than any loaded caravan ) it is still not that simple. I have twice in the past come face to face with one as the driver swings out to get the rig round the hairpin. I dread to think what would happen if an 18 wheeler tipper truck was coming down instead of me. Anyone travelling from the north via the A19 is far better to head for the Great Broughton to Helmsley road which is a much nicer alternative.

    I am sorry if I have offended you in any way as I fear you have misinterpreted my reason for clarification.

    Can I assure you that I never thought to even imply that you may be a ‘perpetrator of terminological in-exactitude's’ in fact If any thing, the exact opposite.

    I will refrain from any further attempts to explain myself as I may, with my poor use of the English language, just further manage to exacerbate the situation.

    I seem to remember not quite making that hairpin in one turn in a LWB Landrover in the 60s but not sure if it was me or himself driving it - pretty sure we weren't towing though!  The alternative doesn't seem too great though either.

     Have towed my twin axle up this hill with our old sorento a couple of years ago with no issues at all but I did have a little voice to my left constantly telling me to turn around.

    The  most  recent  trip  up  Sutton Bank  was  under  guidance  from  a  couple  of  laughing  policemen  !!

    Passed  a  mile  or  three  before  the  start  by  a  Traffic  Car  using  his  blues,  twos  &  a  heavy  right  foot !!  Arrived  at  the  rear  of  a  half  mile  queue.  Getting  the  signal  to  shift  me sen,  I  put  the  motor  in  gear  started  off  up  the  bank  and  just  before  the  'bend'  was  a  nice,  neatly  parked, 50 odd  seater  motor coach.  The  Law  was  guiding  us  round  the  motor  whilst  the  driver  &  his  mates  unloaded  the  luggage,  case  at  a  time,  and  carried  them  up  to  the  top  where  the  passengers , all  of  pensionable  age  were  standing,  muttering  & scowling.  Don't  think  the  driver  was  having his  best  ever  day  !!
