I am heading up to Skye next month and trying to decide the best route from Stirling to Skye.

Won't go to Loch Lomond and I have been to Fort William on the A84, A82, A87 route via Crianlarich and Glencoe.  Googled the route to see mileage and estimated journey time and it suggested the alternative via A9 past Pitlochry and then the A86 across to Spean Bridge to join the A87.  It's about 20 miles longer but only a few minutes more.

I'm thinking the Fort Wiliam route may be quite busy, even mideek, and there are not many places to stop.  Has anyone towed the other way via A9 across to Spean bridge and would you say it was a better route?

Horses for courses. We've done both. I wouldn't like to recommend one route over the other.

The A9 can be faster (average speed cams in place) but is prone to hold ups due to accidents.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

The A9 is a better road as it leaves Pitlochry up through the Drumochter Pass but the A86 is slower. Not much in it, use the route you know to Fort William, at least it's familiar and fuel is available there.

    Thank you for the replies.

Good point about Fort William for supplies and the glencoe/Rannoch moor bit will hopefully be a bit quieter than the A9 on a Wednesday morning.

I too would recommend the Fort William route. The views from road past Bridge of Orchy must be some of the best in the country. The A86 is also narrower and twistier than the A82.
