Hi

Like some previous posts I've made I'm sure this will have already been covered - but how do you get rid of dead flies from the front of the shell of your motorhome, given that you're not meant to use a jet-wash on it?

I have an extending microfibre mop (as recommended in handbook for washing the shell) which reaches the area, but I struggle to apply necesssary pressure given the contouring, and I'm unable to reach the area above the windscreen with a hand sponge (unless I constructed some Heath Robinson style scaffolding).  Given the problem of reaching the area I also struggle to apply some "Bobby Dazzler", which I hoped would make it easier to remove the road kill.

Suggestions welcomed.

Also, do any Edinburgh area members know a place that would do the cleaning for me - I've always considered washing my car an over-rated pastime but the motorhome takes the biscuit...

It's been drizzling with rain here all day and conditions are now just right for fly removal duties seeing they've had a good soaking which is what the job needs.

As for reaching, you can only use steps or similar to aid your reach.

Oh such disappointment I thought this would be a discussion on Eccles cakes 😂😂😂😂.

We too are motorhome owners who struggle to clean the overcab area and yes the bit where it joins the windscreen is the worse part 😲. We use an extendable washing brush that can be attached to a hose, but tend to dip it into a bucket of soapy water for the roof and over cab.  For we in this instantance, read himself, gets on the roof it is strong enough and has a guard rail round the edges and a purpose built ladder attached. So the 'back of the overcast is done as far as can be reached. Once roof is rinsed we tackle sides. Again using the wash brush and small steps we tackle the front windscreen and front bulge, it does reach all over but is too deep to get right into the edge join and struggle with a soft brush. We have now purchased a skinnier microfibre mop for this area but aren't over keen on washing vehicles so it's not been tried yet. Never showed it any Polish 😲😲

I'd be interested in replies. There is a mobile van cleaner advertising where we store our motorhome but haven't asked about price or method of cleaning.

Agree about giving them a good soak.

To remove flies (when it doesn't rain) go over them with a wet sponge or cloth, leave for a while then go over them again with the cleaning sponge. They then come off without too much pressure.

If it is dry weather, try using a hosepipe last thing at night and your brush first thing in the morning. Over night dew might help.

As said, soaking the insect first helps, I sometimes use hot water. I then wash with Carapak wash and wax. Anything left?;  I use a dedicated bug remover. You can use vehicle polish but that will take off a micro amount of your paintwork.

If you go on websites selling to 'car detailers' then you will find they supply spray containers and numerous magical chemicals. This might make it easier to clean in those difficult areas because it enables you to spray from a bit further away. They also supply a range of sponges [I use one with netting on the back to give extra cleaning power] and soft brushes [I use one that is like a traditional hand brush for the house but with soft bristles and a small, round paintbrush-like one]. Two firms I buy from are Chemical Guys and AutoBrite Direct.

I have used 'snow foam' as a pre wash and it works. Unfortunately, I find the necessary care and attention required [best results come from using a pressure washer although I'm told it can be used with a garden spray] make it tiresome.

Heath Robinson is the only answer to cleaning the van unless you invest in something like a ladder that can be converted to a platform. I dangle off a step ladder.

You are right in believing waxing the paintwork will make it easier to clean off bugs.

    Thanks for responses.

Without hoping for a wet summer to help this process I'll just persevere with the mop I have, but soak it with a hose before starting. As soon as I start washing it then the rain will probably come anyway!
