Real ale in Whitby

Had 5 nights away last week on a C&CC THS at Dalby Forest, great for dog walking, also had a day in Whitby. After having a walk around, we went up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, no we did not see Dracula, but the Whitby micro-brewery. Great beers, I was driving so had to be careful, the Whitby Whaler was very good, but the Smugglers Gold was even better, the wife liked the Abbey Blond. Next time I will be getting the bus in. Suggest, next time you are in Whitby, it is worth the climb up the steps for a drink!

Next time you're there, try the Waiting Room micro pub on Whitby station. Owned and run by friends of mine who are passionate about real ale and keeping it well.

No music, TV, slots, lager or kids but just good beer, wine and cider served in a friendly atmosphere. Oh yes, it's dog friendly too!!

Went in today following the recommendation, helpful barmaid who let me 'try before buy', she was both knowledgeable and friendly. Will definitely visit again. Small (room that is) embarassed but very agreeably and comfortably furnished.

Glad you enjoyed your visit. The helpful barmaid, is Sue my friend and co owner. She and Rob will be pleased you enjoyed your visit too. The micro pub idea is really taking off. Good beer in small comfortable surroundings. A perfect combination.

Ggregu, could you do me a favour please. We're heading Whitby way in July and wouldn't mind having a drink but I have a problem with Wheat. I've contacted all of the major breweries to find out which beers are made without Wheat but can't contact all of the micro breweries. I'm fine with Barley. Could you ask if they have any non Wheat beers? Would be appreciated.

Wherenext, you may already know, but for anyone who doesn't, you can now buy gluten free beer in Aldi.  OK bottled, but perhaps still of interest to some people.

Thanks, ValDa. I am lucky in that I can buy and drink any beer that is made with Barley and therefore do not have to rely on gluten free ones. My favourite brewers are Timothy Taylors in Yorkshire, as none of their beers are made with wheat, and Adnams in Norfolk, who make a large number of wheat free beers.

The gluten free variety can be quite good, such as St.Peters. Most barstaff in pubs do not have any idea when asked if their beers have wheat or not so I often rely on bottle beer in pubs as these have to have their ingredients on them, either that or drink Cider or Wine.

Wherenext, have contacted my friend Sue who says they always have 3  types of bottled gf beer. It is also worth asking when you go, which cask beers are made from barley- Rob will tell you, he's passionate about his beer! Because they change beers very frequently it's not possible to predict what they may have in July.

They also sell a huge range of ciders too! Hic!

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Gill. Looking forward to it.

Ps I should have edited a previous post as Adnams is of course a Suffolk brewer found in Southwold but sold extensively in East Anglia.
