Breathable groundsheet question

We are just about to start our caravan adventure and pick up our new van in just over a weeks time.  We have an awning with a breathable groundsheet.  If it is wet will it penetrate through the groundsheet.  Would it get muddy.  I have seen mats for sale.  Are these worth having.  I would be very grateful if someone could clear this up for me so that I don't get caught out

    Hi Christine...Great times ahead!!

    What we found was... yes the groundsheet can get a bit dirty/muddy but more treading it in than it penetrating through, unless it goes down on wet grass (but we have two dogs who are muck magnets!!) we can put up with it for a w/e but any longer then we put the rubber slot together, like a jig saw, matting on top then if it's dry and sunny a carpet goes on top of that, home from home cool Most sites require you to lift the bottom of the awning to let the grass breath, no problem if your on hard standing.

    If put on top of wet grass etc then the awning should stop the ground sheet top surface from becoming wet. However if put on top of  a puddle the water will come through.

    They do get muddy on the underside due to pressure of footprints etc. They are easy to hose down at home but it is handy to have a waterproof sack to stick them into for transport.

    Never bothered with mats so cannot comment.smile

    We use interlocking foam tiles- Aldi had them on offer a couple of weeks back £ 9.99 for pack of six I think. 

    We find them lighter to lug around than a groundsheet.- much warmer and softer.

    We use a 2mtr x 2.5 mtr porch awning and we find 12 covers it fully.

    Wouldn't use anything  else now.

    But not on grass, surely?

    That said, whatever you put on grass (even just an awning with no groundsheet) will kill off the grass and leave yellow / bald patches.

    IanH. Don't do grass unless I can help it and then do not bother with tiles or groundsheet. 

    Tiles are great on hardstand as they absorb the " bricks"

    Thank you for all your information and tips.  I think I will just go off and see how it goes.  I can always drown my sorrows if it gets too wet.

    I think you will find that Most sites require you to Lift the Groundsheet to air the grass not just the awning baseundecided
