best route from north yorks to Abbey wood
Hi all, we are relatively new to caravaning and haven't travelled very far afield as yet . We tend to stay close to home ...North Yorkshire! I have taken the plunge and booked a few days in London at the Abbey Wood site at the end of May. However , I'm a little anxious about towing down to London ...all that traffic! Can anyone advise on the best time to set off from up here to avoid heavy traffic also the best route for a nervous tower! We are in Harrogate.

Just use A1,A14, M25 across Dartford crossing then follow Club route details. It is inside Low Emmission Zone area, so make sure you check what you need in terms of your vehicle if anything. Can't help with dodging traffic, this is London and SE, another world! Have a good time!

I would agree with the above route, you could even join M25 from A1 as A14 is undergoing work to widen it, also a busy road at peak times. Might you like to break the journey if you're nervous? Living in the SE it is busy road wise, that's not to put you off! Someone reviewed the site recently and put in the low emissions charges - I think £200 plus?? Do check it out. If you want to visit London how about staying elsewhere and getting a train in? Again not to put you off but consider other options. Unfortunately Essex has no CAMC sites so check out CL'S if you choose Essex.

I have just noticed you say your visit is end of May, possibly BH? If so, traffic could be horrendous down there.

There is no "best time" to avoid traffic, down here, .what do you want to do in London,? as Bakers says what about staying North of London ,and catching train, there is a cc site (Commons Wood) easy access of the A1M at Welwyn Garden City and a good train service to Kings Cross, good bus service from near the site to either WGC or Hatfield Rail stations, just a thought to save going round M25 and into London

Towing to Abbey Wood from North Yorkshire will be no different from towing anywhere else on busy motorways in the UK until you exit the M25 just after the Dartford Crossing (don't forget to investigate how you pay for the crossing before you leave) Getting to Abbey Wood won't involve towing anywhere near Central London.
I have used two routes from the M25 to get to the site. The official Club route or an alternative route via Erith and Thamesmead which I found easier but as pointed out by another member might depend on the day and time of travelling. You can see this alternative route here in my site review.

We have used both the Dartford bridge and the Woolwich ferry routes and believe the bridge route easier.
Once there do heed the wardens warnings about not leaving shoes outside the caravan (even in the awning). My OH lost her shoes thanks to the nocturnal ramblings of the foxes in the neighbourhood

Buzzer. I live just down the road from you. I would agree that the A1 is generally much more amenable. I tend to experience far fewer jams and is more laid back.....but bank holiday...ifmso everywhere will be rubbish in which case go as early as feasible

Bozzer,I cannot really say what is your best route from Yorks but from Dartford Crossing has improved Essex in to Kent it is going from Kent side through the tunnel to Essex that has the delays, there are two routes, one as David Kylne mentions through Erith and Thamesmead, but I have not tried this, the other route as published in the club handbook is the route I have just completed.
Your post does not say when you are travelling, but If you can travel in the middle part of the day as to the avoid rush hour.Travelling from the A2 to the site is not that bad as you are governed by a 50mph section, also there is no bottlenecks, just care needed at the first two roundabouts as you leave the slip road. One gripe I do have and its nothing to do with the site, are the speed humps as you travel along Mcleod Rd.
Once on site, you would never know you were in a London suburb.
Train fares to London are around £12 odd and it might take you to Cannon Street if restrictions to the London Bridge station improvements are implemented.
Greenwich is worth a visit too.
