Touring the West Coast of Scotland
Hi Everyone,
I am a new member and am planning to tour the west coast of Scotland later this year with my wife in our California; does anyone have any good tips, rout suggestions etc.
All comments greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Paul

Hello and welcome to CT and our great hobby. Somewhere on here there is at least one recent thread on here with tips. The search facility is rubbish but I'll have a go at it if I get the chance later, you also have to remember it's title 😲.
Depending on when you go midges are problematic in dry windless conditions. Even my husband who's not usually troubled by biting things gets attacked. Avon Skin So Soft BLUE dry oil is reasonable at keeping them at bay, but it's not fool proof! Long sleeves and legs best. A good breeze is the best deterrent ☺.
It's a beautiful area and plenty to see, distances are deceptive too.

Hi SallynPaul, every couple of years or so we have our 2 week summer holiday up the west coast. We live in Dundee and can get up to Ullapool in a day and set up. We quite like the drive up the A9, very scenic. We prefer Ardmair Point site about 3 miles past Ullapool, to the Broomfield site actually in Ullapool. We have also stayed at Clachtoll Beach campsite, very remote, but we love that aspect. There is another site called The Shore Campsite at Achmelvich. We've never stayed on it, but beach is a must. There are lost of places to tour and visit once you're up there. Try to stock up on food, drink and petrol when you can, as facilities can be few an far between. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll love it. Even the rain and midges can't put us off😉

You might also enjoy the West Coast south of Oban, visit the Bridge over the Atlantic, Seil and Luing. You don't have to head north, the area round Crinan and Dunadd Fort (put your foot where Scottish Kings put theirs!) is lovely and you can head down towards Kyntyre and even visit Islay or Gigha. The climate is usually very mild. If you get over to Carradale, facing east you'll see Arran in front of you. Hope you have a good time.
