When i researched the Nissan CVT i read that it had 8 "gears" to give the feeling of a conventional auto.

2000 revs is probably ok for running in, but max torque i believe is lower  at 1750 rpm?

I think i would be taking it back to nissan as not fit for purpose.

I also lost interest after reading the tow limit was only 1650kg.

Our Merc changes up to 9th gear considerably lower than you are stating even tows at 55MPH in 8th. The excuse Nissan have given for use in Europe means your car will only be in top gear for about the top 10MPH which is odd at the best of times. personally I would do a lot more digging something is not right somewhere.

OH loves using the paddles to go up and down the gears! (Too much time spent in the automotive industry and on race tracks.) Other than that I'd agree with what you say SteveL. wink (edit, should've quoted your post from page one, went straight into a reply before going to the last page, another forum design fault.)

This is all interesting stuff and many differing points of view.  The engineer to whom I spoke at Nissan assured me that his own car - not a Nissan - will not engage 7th until around the 80 mph mark.  I did not think to ask him the make of the car.

What intrigues me at present is that as we approach 400 miles the computer appears to be changing what happens with regard to the selection of ratios.  I have not done a long journey yet which I probably need to do.  I will then be able to see more clearly how things are.  The

Rejecting the car as unfit is not an option as it is an ideal vehicle in every other respect in terms of specification and practicality and the only one we can find which we both find comfortable.  Ageing backs and arthritic joints do not take take to cars with seats like municipal park benches.

The 1650 kg towing limit is far higher than we need so we have no anxieties on that score.  Our new caravan will shortly be due for collection so I am hoping that Nissan will manage to deliver the promised tow bar.

"...why should you have to use manual for towing..."

Anyone who does not use the manual option on mountainous downhill gradients would, in my opinion, be running the risk of having seriously over heating brakes.  On our previous car we used the manual option on downhill gradients in France frequently.

I quite agree with you but the quote implies that the manual option should be used all the time when towing, nothing is mentioned regarding downhill braking.

I suppose its must be true with a CVT, but my torque converter auto setup knows when there is overun on a downhill and will hold the gear or change down. It definiely won't change up.
