Gas Hose Length

Just received our new gas barby similar to Cadac, on reading the instructions it states that a max hose length of 1.5m is used to connect.

As I intend to use this alongside M'home using the Safefill bottle, but on the other side to the gas locker, I intended to use a length of 4.5m.

As the internal appliances all have more than 1.5m pipes to them and bear in mind that I'll be using the barby on its own, will there be a significant pressure drop at the barby, thus rendering it useless?

All comments greatly appreciated.....cool

    I  don't  think  its  a  "Pressure" problem,  BT  --  more  likely  a  "Safety"  thing  --  thus  the  shorter  the  better {  less  chance  of  tripping  over  it  etc  }

When we had the caravan I used a 3m hose that ran from the bottle under the caravan to the BBQ ,and had no problems , obviously I made sure nobody ran about in the area ,not just because of the hose ,but more of the hot BBQ

i am probably going to be shot for having that length of hose 🤔

Brian.......I agree with the above replies. I don't believe there to be a 'technical' problem with longer hoses and that it's just a 'H&S' thing.......so just do your own thing and be careful not to trip over it, would be my advice.

We have about 3.5 metres of hose to our Cadac and it works fine. Unless you stretch it fairly taught 1.5 metres isn't really enough to move it away from the van, so to me would be more of a safety risk than a longer length.

Don't forget, Steve, that you need to be within reach of the on/off valve in the interests of safety in case of burn back along the pipe from the appliance. It happens.

Thanks folks, I do think that the point raised by TW is a very valid one, especially as our gas locker is on the other side....cool

I can certainly get to it fast enough TW, as I use the extra length to run it along the floor, rather than to get 3 metres from the van. I am uncertain how it would burn back along the hose though. The hose is filled with 100% gas. It will certainly burn where it comes out and mixes with the air and even explode if the mixture reaches certain percentages. Perhaps there is a gas expert who can shed some light on the subject.

Why not take the safe fill bottle to the barby? Did the barby come with a gas hose?

In the MH days when the Cadac arrived a couple of years in, used to carry a cheaper to refill BBQ gas bottle only for the Cadac. In the days before payload was a consideration and if required to take more junk on holiday, a small trailer was towed cool. But the Cadac was also used at home mounted on the wall bracket at the back of the house.

We have certainly used ours on camping gaz, we still have one of the large cylinders from our camping days. Although an expensive way to buy gas, they take up relitively little room / payload, and with the Cadac last for ages.

Not  a  "Gas  Expert"  Steve,  but  I  have  seen  an  acetylene  bottle  with  the  hose  burning  !!  The  hose  had  been  accidentally  draped  over  the  exhaust    of  a  compressor  'til  it  burned  through.

A  knowledgeable  gent  strolled  out,  bent  the  hose  double  in  his  bare  hands,  the  flames  extinguished  and  he   casually  shut  the  bottle  valve.  It  was  only  then  that  he  shewed  any  emotion,  and  a  fine  command  of  the  English  language  as  he  berated  the  careless  construction  engineer  !!

As  long  as  there  is  pressure  in  the  bottle  the  hose  will  melt  back  slowly  rather  than  burn  as  we  understand  it.  Then  when  the  bottle  is  virtually  empty  the  pressure  will  drop,  obviously,  and  the  flames  can  go  back  towards  the  bottle,  and  should  it  not  be  switched  off  you  have  the  potential  for  a  "Big  Bang"

Thanks ABM that's more or less what I assumed. I once had flames from the thread connector to the Cadac, when I had stupidly only hand tightened it, then got distracted. I quickly , turned off the supply at the caravan, which is actually a disconnect on our type, and of course it extinguished.

Calor recommend hose should not exceed 2 meters. I have had a dealer who reminded me of this and refused to sell me a longer piece.

For  all  the  Dealer  knew  PeeDee,  you  were  replacing  a  few  shorter  lengths  in  your  'van  !

Buy online then.  Better than the awning going up in flames which was the risk for me when using the full size awning

Hi Brian, for many years we had children with us on all our trips and chose to minimise the risk of one of them tripping, and pulling over the BBQ,by using a 6kg cylinder and short length of hose.

Whilst we do not always holiday with children now we find that being able to place the BBQ to either side, or end, of the van is very useful as is having a 'make do' supply while we sort a replacement for our 10kg gaslight.

    Hi a&j.

Thanks for your input.   As stated upthread, I intend to use a half full 5kg gaslite using the original supplied hose and regulator, until i figure a way to connect up an external barby connection to my main gas supply which is a Safefill. We should get a few meals out of a half full 5kg gaslite, so plenty  of time to work out and install my external barby point.......cool

    Shall we open a book??

40 nights use of your barby on the gas left in the bottle tongue-outtongue-out

They really use very little gas. In 8 years we used 1 x Camping Gaz 807, and 1 x BBG Calor bottle including use at home and away.

In fact this thread has reminded me there is a full 807 in the shed, just need the adaptor.
