Hello

we are planning to leave for Scotland mid March. We have never visited this area before. We have narrowed it down to two areas working our way up from Derwentwater. The first is a site Benderloch/connel and the second a club site Buntree Onich Fort William. Which area would folks suggest please.

I assume you mean the North Ledaig AS and Bunree sites. Both are good and my personal preference is N Ledaig. However, there's little to choose and you can cover the surrounding area from either. Go with whatever takes your fancy.

Depends how long you are staying. My preference would be probably to use both sites if away for say 9 nights.

They are only around 30miles apart. Is it worth moving?

I presume you mean this site at Benderloch? See here

This is in a good spot for Oban and the ferry to Mull etc. Bunree is nearer to Fort William and Ben Nevis. A difficult call as both sites give you access to similar places. Personally if you've never been before I'd go for the Connel bridge area just because it's easy for day trips to Mull and Iona. But if you don't mind driving up and down Loch Linnhe I'm sure you'll enjoy either site. Have a good time! smile

It would be for me TW. Depends how long I was away for .... we don't know how long the OP wants to spend. I gave an example of 9 nights because when I was working I might shove off one Friday afternoon and come back on a Sunday and 9 nights at either site would be too long for me.

Perhaps Ellemae will come back and give us some more info? It's a lovely area to visit for the first time, lots to see in all directions. In March it will probably be a bit cold with snow still on the mountains so check out weather conditions for travelling.

    • Hi ellemae, we prefer Oban as a town. It is nicer, more touristy, things to do, ferry trips. Fort William is bit rundown and not as welcoming in our opinion. However, we think that there is more that we like to see and do in the surrounding area. Ben Nevis, Neptune's Staircase, a trip out to Mallaig and the Sands of Morar. We've been to both lots of times and will continue to go back to both. Hope this helps,Alex

I am with Alex Cassells in that Oban is a far more attractive place than Fort William. At the end of the day though where you want to go in the area might be the deciding factor.

The Falls of Lora will be running at optimum on the 29th & 30th March, well worth spending time there.

I'm  another who prefers Oban, North Leading site. It's much more open, every pitch has a great view and Oban is a much better town. Bunree is nice but in bad weather rather dark and dismal.

    Thanks Brue.

Back in the day when I was competing in canoe slalom there was a GB Team selection event at Grandtully on the Tay below Aberfeldy each Easter. One year the following weekend was a second event at Bala, so we spent the week in Scotland, skiing at Glen Shee, golf at Kenmore Castle, then sat in the pub at the Bridge of Conell awaiting the falls of Lora to appear and go paddle them. Then onto Oban for dinner. In those days it was tenting.

A truly beautiful part of the world, especially in springtime.

Must get back up that way now we have the caravan.

As a motorhomer, I prefer Bunree because there are some great road trips from the site. Fort William makes a better effort for motorhomers. If I was back in my caravanning days, I'd chose the other because Oban is nicer than Fort William. Not sure whether Oban will be slightly warmer in March.

The sites themselves are both good.
