Pendant light in awning

hi,

just after a bit of a sanity check really. Could anyone advise if they have or if it's safe to make your own 240v pendant lamp for use in an awning. Looking at various Isabella retailers they sell a pendant lamp which is designed to hang from a rafter pole inside the awning.

Not one for liking to throw away money, I am convinced I can make one for far less than Isabella sell theirs for. Basically it looks like a standard pendant light fitting on a length of cord with a 2 pin plug.

does anyone know if it needs to be sealed or damp proof? The awning it would be used in is a new Isabella Capri, so it will not be damp.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Alan

I for years I have used an "inspection" lamp as available from DIY or motor spares shops

DIY 240 volt on a caravan site seems like a bad idea to me.

Whereas I have no problem with 240 volt wiring and fittings by anybody competent.

Non metallic light fittings are 2 core wiring. No idea why you would use a 2 pin plug though!

We have an awning lamp somewhere,  bought years ago, with a clip integral to the lamp fitting designed to clip onto an awning pole.

Sorry for the confusion. Isabella sell a pendant light fitting on a cord with a 2 pin continental 2 pin plug.

if I were to make 1, it would be a standard 3 pin plug on a length of cord with a standard "home" pendant light fitting.

I cant see any issues with this idea, but thought I would  put it to the club members in case I am missing any health and safety issues; mainly around damp, condensation etc.

You'll be fine ..... your caravan has a RCD so if anything did go wrong, the breaker would trip.

I have done the same.....and used a fitting with a large plastic 'bulldog' clip which clips to a shelf purchased from Wilko....

The clip also fits the awning roof rafter.

Use a low energy bulb (11 watt) and the heat given off is minimal..

Why not go LED lights ( in a strip maybe) and run them off the 12v ?

    Should.

    May be it will.

    Perhaps.

12 volt will be safer. laughing
