    We decided, as we had a good caravan that we liked, and as the MH dealers did not want to offer us a decent trade in price for it ( less than 75% of its real value), we preferred to keep our nice caravan, which suited our needs.

    I don't think we will regret the decision.  As we get older, the caravan now seems to suit  us more, if caravanning gets too much for us then we will sell up.

    I would think, barring unforseen happenings we possibly  have another 10 years left.

    My Mum was 98 when she died, so I am planning on emulating her!

    That sound like our Shogun, MM. After 16 mpg in that, it's wonderful to get 26 out of the MH.

    Our first towcar was a 2.5 turbo Subaru forester.Pulling a Lunar clubman 475-2 we were getting 13mpg. You could overtake BMW and Audi though as it was very quick! The wife,old lead boot,loved it. The replacement was a 2 litre diesel Forester, 28mpg towing,50 mpg solo, boring but sensible. If we can get around 30mpg out of the motorhome I will be satisfied. None of the manufacturers seem to publish MPG figures unlike carmakers who all produce urban, extra urban etc.

    We are wedded to the caravan,both our parents had them and we simply cannot see the advantage to us of changing now.

    The last four cars all diesels two Vauxhalls and two Mazdas have all bettered 30 mpg towing but having ordered a petrol because of the possible problems with diesels I will have to see what that manages.

    Having a lightweight caravan though is a big help with fuel consumption.

    We have got a steady 35 mpg average from our MH. Varies a touch up and down depending on routes and roads, but we are delighted with what we average. Admittedly on the smaller side, but that is doing 70mph on motorways as well. Lovely relaxing drive as well, OH much prefers to towing caravan around, but I know others love towing so very much a personal preference.

    The MH converters don't publish MPG figures because they don't know what effect the weight of the conversion will have on the MPG of the solo base vehicle.

    Our MH, as I said, is the same size and weight as the Bourton. It's a bit older (2011) with the auto Merc. We live in an area of low MPG, unlike you. We don't drive it for economy preferring to get the long m/way stretches over with asap but we average about 26mpg.

    We tow a heavy caravan and get 35 on a motorway at constant 60mph with a large diesel automatic car.

    Solo the car will happily sit at above 70 and return 50+mpg with a 7 speed box.

    The new tow car has a 9 speed outbox with the same diesel engine, is heavier and 4WD too. Be interesting to see how economical it is being a lot taller than the car and therefore more aligned to the caravan height.

    We used to get 32mpg on the diesel MH at a steady 62mph, based on optimum engine revs so as not to just burn fuel. A very old fashioned diesel that could run on veg oil and only 4 forward gears.

    I was amazed.when I checked my fuel computer to discover I had returned 35.5mpg. Not bad for a 7m MH running pretty near 3500kg. this was mostly motorway and running at 2000rpm, around 57mph. Since then I have had a 34mpg but generally return around 30mpg.

    But your E class wasn't  permanent 4x4 & was probably 1/2 ton lighter wink I could just about manage 20/21 towing the previous Lunar,  but our Coachman is the best part of 1900kg  and I've  been getting 18/19. Pretty much the same as my V6 3.0 Omega  towing the Lunar, though once saw 16.6mpg towing to Devon/Cornwall towing in a gale.

    When we started caravanning MH's barely existed so it wasn't a consideration. We hired caravans for our main holiday for 3 years, which decided us, yes we liked it and also what kind of layout we wanted. Suggest you do the same and hire a MH and see if that style of machine/holidaying before committing. It's a lot of expense if it turns out you don't like it. There's always 1 yr old vans, MHs up for sale - tried it once, didn't like it perhaps? High depreciation loss for not being sure before committing!  (We have debated the matter since and decided our style of holidaying is more suited to towing and when fitness demands, we'll fit a mover onto the van).
