More drivers are using their mobile phones for direction and I feel members need to be aware more so if towing or driving a Motor home.

To all my friends I would like to remind you that this morning the new improved law about driving while holding your mobile device carry a £200 fixed penalty and 6 points on you licence.
But be reminded that if you get caught twice in 3 years that is 12 points which could mean the loss of driving licence.

Please think this could save your's and others life.

There are other rules for those who have recently passed their driving test.

Do you think we should be giving these details to our members,

If the phone is mounted on the screen, and being used as a sat nav and not a phone, why would it be considered, in the eyes of the law, any different than using a stand alone sat nav?

Hi Simon, because the law says so. It also says that if you touch a mobile, even when stationary, that is an offence and I would not want to be trying to argue that point.

I got rid of my phone car mount as I felt I was liable to 'fiddle' with it and my phone stays in my pocket.

Personally I would go for a stand alone sat nav. Not because I think this is likely to be an issue. More because these can be bought for a very reasonable price, and I would rather that was frying in its window mount on a sunny day, than an expensive phone.

However, phone used as sat nav, or stand alone sat nav, if you are fiddling with it and considered not in control of your vehicle, that is an offence.

I guess because that's what people choose to do.

You are wrong actually as, if you get a decent phone, it's master of all and there's no need to restrict yourself to only making phone calls. A whole new world awaits those willing to open their minds to the possibilities.

It's not minds that are problem with phones but eyes.  Never seen a phone with a 12 inch screen.

Good point Tinster. My phone is my satnav. Excellent clarity, big screen easy to use, instant updates-£14 p/yr. if the phone rings or a mail/text comes in then it's no difference to when the phone in the car is by my side, I ignore it until I stop.

It's marvellous, isn't it, Rocky? As well as sat nav, you have music, for instance, and you can catch up with the forum and even watch TV - not while driving, obviously.

I'm so glad I kept up to date with technology. 👍🏻

I have OsmAnd+ on my phone, not as a vehicle sat nav although I have occasionally used it as such. I use it mainly to navigate when walking. Its great for finding the nearest POI or marking where you left the car to insure you can find it again in a town or city you don't know.

I tend to use my mobile for so many different things.  I more often than not use it instead of my laptop.

Oh how I agree! It should be as antisocial as drinking and driving. Sadly you see examples of phone use everyday. Similar to drivers who apply makeup or shave whilst driving. We need more police patrols cos if they don't think.theyll get caught they'll carry on. I notice work vehicles with sign writing on them driver using mobile and passenger sitting there,  I presume too frightened of losing their job to say anything or report.

My mobile connects via my cars bluetooth system so that my mobile becomes a "hands free" system.

In my opinion it's just as distracting as holding the phone but then no one ever calls me cry so it's not a problem.

I, too, think the Bluetooth hands free system is great for occasional urgent calls but surely anyone using their phone as a sat nav will have it in a purpose designed holder mounted on the dash or screen in the same way as a sat nav is mounted.  No one would hold it in their hand - would they?

Of course the odd thing is that the police never report themselves for using mobile comms. whilst driving.

You can often see them on TV  programmes chatting to control centre whilst driving, sometimes whilst under twos and blues.

Are they, then, super beings who never have or cause a crash?

Also I disagree with these "infotainment systems" on some cars,

Phone, radio, sat navs, even dvd and internet!

Accidents waiting to happen especially with things like faceplant ,Twitter etc.

Or is it that I can't afford a new car with one of these new fan dangled gagitry???? undecided

I have watched a few DVD films on my cars screen while waiting for my wife, great for passing the time away laughing Nothing wrong with 'Infotainment,' just the drivers mentality in abusing it.

+1 Dave, they're wonderful. It's the future. Don't take the extras from the cars, take the idiots from them. No one is forced to use them whilst driving-that's choice, bad choicefrown
