Can anyone tell me if you can get British tv in Spain?   Do I need a satellite dish and how big?

AD is right a huge dish would be required, last time we were in Alicante they were using 1.2m dishes 1.4m in Murcia, so you would possibly require one bigger.

Hi I live in the Costa Blanca region but about 20 miles from  Almeria and I have a 1.4 metre dish on my roof and that is the minimum requirement here don't know how big your outfit is but a 2 metre dish will fill your pitch on most sites with no room for chairs outside. Don't know where you're going but some sites do have plugin for Brit TV and now some external companies are offering IPTV but you have to take out a short term contract for three months I think.

    Enjoy

In Alicante area even a 1.4M dish can give you iffy reception in bad weather. For Almeria, think Jodrell Bank size.

If your proposed site has good wifi then I'd us an IPTV solution. IPlayer and the like, probably need to use a VPN though to make it look like you're still in the UK. Personally I've never found site wifi to be good enough though.

I am told that one can get Sky TV channels quite far south in Spain, but not the BBC and ITV channels?

    Hi

The costa blanca site we overwinter on you'd need as Phil mentions above a 1.4 meter dish. I have an IPTV box which includes most sky channels and pay a monthly subscription to a local company. Basically you buy the box and find a local firm to subscribe to. You do need a minimum of 3 meg wifi though to sustain the signal. Luckily here for 25 euros a month we have an excellent 30 meg of wifi loveliness!

Are we talking about BBC, ITV etc or the Sky channels? I ask because I get the Sky channels with an 80cm dish at Oropesa, Costa Azahar - about 50 miles north of Valencia. Not been further south though.

We decided that the best 'solution' would be to watch British terrestrial TV on the ipad using FilmOn. Others have posted on CT in regard to this system so there is more info if you want it.

To aid this we have invested in a iBoost system as we are BT customers so hope that we can access the internet through the FON system or at least make accessing site wifi more reliable.

We have not used it abroad yet the feedback from users is promising and, even if it is not a total solution, it will be no more frustrating than spending hours trying to set up a dish etc.

The problem with relying on site wifi when abroad for Filmon will be bandwidth.

OH has been known to spend up to 4 hours setting it up on some sites, he can be very determined (bl@@dy minded) when he knows he should get a signal but can't.

He has now parted with a fair chunk of money and had one installed on the roof of the van, hopefully in the very near future peace will once again reign on our holidays. At least on an overnighter when its raining we will have a tv to watchwink

I was told about a brilliant App for finding a good spot on your pitch to place the sat dish. It is called Satfinder Lite. It gives you every satellite position in the sky, so I Deleted User all except Astra 2. Stand where you want to place sat dish and look through phone and it will show you the Sat ark through the sky and the exact position of Astra 2. If there is clear line of sight to the satellite plonk your sat dish there and connect as normal. It is very useful on wooded sites.Use Manhattan sat finder to connect in minuets, never had a problem with this combination anywhere in Europe!! I use a 1.35 Sat dish, which is the biggest I can fit under the fixed bed. I can get Freesat as far east as Garda and south as Tarragona.

Why would you want to watch tv in Spain especially British tv which is rubbish, surely there's much better things to see and visit on a evening or a day time, read a book

As an alternative to Satellite, and if there is wifi at reasonable cost AND fast enough, how about using something like the Amazon TV Firestick? I've been using one at home and in the van. Love it. You don't have to subscribe to Amazon prime to get all of the free view channels either. One thing to note. The BBC iPlayer will sense if you are abroad, so you will need to run a vpn as well (makes iPlayer think your in the UK).  The only way I have managed this is to use mobile date to the phone, run the VPN on the phone and setup a wifi hotspot. Locally I can get 4g. Brilliant solution, if a tad on the expensive side.

Just got back. My wife had a stroke and can't move very much and is not able to hold a book. She does use a Kindle to read all day, but by night she needs something easier to do.  OK!!!!!

DJG, you will find some highly opinionated and very judgemental people on an open forum. This forum can be very lively at times but you have to take it with a pinch of salt. You will get some great advice as well. Just ignore the keyboard warriors.

As I said up thread, I love my IPTV box, it cost me 100 euros and I pay monthly when I'm in Spain. Around 3meg of wifi will do the job ok, and no massive dish taking up pitch space.

You should never ignore a "book reader" otherwise they will win and we will never have TV to watch again, think what a world would be like without TV and populated with "book readers"!!!!!!

Just come back from 6 weeks in Spain for some winter sun (Benicassim and Marjal Costa Blanca) Could only pick up Sky news/CNN and a few other random channels using the Oyster Sat dish on the roof.  However someone gave me a website "Mallorca Freeview" and we picked up BBC1/BBC2/BBC news/ITV and Channel 4 using the wifi on site on the lap top... next year will take the Apple TV and link it to the TV.

How does this differ from using say Filmon, we used them the last time we were in Spain but a good wifi signal is required, is having an IPTV box any better?  Is the 25€ a month for the good signal?

Always keen to look at the options checked the Mallorca Freeview and it appears to link through to FilmOn.

Regarding other options I think that for me, as holidayer rather than long stayer, the other options mentioned, including the massive dish are less viable.
