New sky box
Has anyone used the new sky "Q" box while away from the house and not connected to phone line? Even though it is connected through the sat dish.
I was told that it only works if connected by phone line to the internet as well as the sat dish. My sky plus box gives me the extras on the internet in UK and Ireland but not abroad!!
Is this new box a way of sky stopping you using it away from home?

No direct experience of it but that's what we were told too. We have a family house in France and take our Sky+ HD boxes over with us when we go and plug them into the satellite dish at the house. We have been told do not upgrade to Sky Q as it requires internet through the phone line and it has to be your home phone line where the box is registered to.
We have had a satellite dish installed to our caravan so we can use our Sky box while away. So it looks like we're all stuck with the old boxes for a few years! FWIW, I've heard that the Sky Q boxes have terrible wifi and quality problems.
HTH!

Thanks for that. We will have to wait for the summer, when many more people go abroad and try to use the new Q box, to see if they come up with some way round the problem!! Looks like all the expats in Europe will have to be careful about upgrading.

The new Sky Q box can be used while away from the home as it does not require an Internet connection. However the LNB needs to be changed if you have a portable sat dish. Unfortunately signal finders cannot pick up the Sky Q transmission however there is a work around.
People use their old LNB to pick up the current Sky signal and then once it is locked in change the LNB for the Sky Q LNB.
Another work around is to take your old Sky+HD box with you and to use the card from it in the old box. Apparently it works okay and you can watch and record programs.
