We are a bit shocked by insurance prices

Hello Everyone

Our Bailey Unicorn Cadiz went into production during the first week in January so we are very excited about picking it up sometime in February

we have just been check the cost of the insurance with the caravan club and it comes out at £51 per month.

I expect that is because we have never had a caravan and therefore haven't built up a no claims bonus - is that correct? Should we look somewhere else do you think?

thanking you in anticipation

What security devices have you listed as having.

Always worthwhile checking elsewhere for similar cover although I have always used the CC insurance after occasionally checking.

You do need to check you have applied all the available discounts. Such as wheel lock, secure storage storage, tracking if applicable, ATC and excess. We have a 3 year old Cadiz insured with the CC. Total price before discounts is supposed to be £901. There is only a £147 NCD, however after all the other discounts / add-ons for discount protection, monthly instalments etc the total is £326.

Hope that price is for a new for old basis.

I would certainly look about but make sure you are judging like for like

Agree shop around compare like for like.  If it is a new for old the insurer may also take into account Baileys price increases. Some started Dec 2016 others to follow – saw an article in CC Feb 2017 magazine.

There's no doubt that caravans are dear to insure because they are high risk items. MHs seem to be more reasonable when you take into consideration their price.

It's worth using security devices which bring a discount.

    Thank you everyone

We have told them that we have a hitch lock and a wheel lock and it is stored on a gold site

Is there anything else security wise that is essential?

    It is old for new

We have been quoted £331 by Commertial Express Gold ( including Europe)

    Does anyone know of them?

    Many thanks

one thing to consider is that if you are unfortunate in having to make a claim how would they react in dealing with the claim, one this is that the CC service is excellent.

Shop around to get the best quote , the difference can be mind boggling £££££ , we are with Saga at the moment & they haven't been beaten on renewal for the last few years.

Our premium this year £200 + bits for £17500 new for old caravan (2014) & £1000 contents , our premiums didn't seem overly expensive when we first started .

    Good luck.........😇

Edit..... Don't feel obligated to stay with your insurance provider in future either , if I have to change every year to get the best quote ........I do , that goes for car & home insurance as well.

They did not give me a discount for a hitch lock but did for ATC, tracker, and accepting an excess on any claim. Personally I would not tick the hitch lock box if you don't get a discount ( as I didn't) otherwise there is a requirement to always fit it to comply with your insurance.

Sounds about right to me. I'm a new user and insured through the club on an £18,000 new for old basis for a base premium of £793 but received discounts totalling £340.

Perhaps because I coughed loudly on hearing their first offer the above includes a discount of £111 one years no claim bonus.

I shall certainly be shopping around come renewal time but hope that I'm able to stay with the club's insurance.

I have a £200 excess as if I had damage of around this figure I would pay to have it repaired myself happily. I also do not insure contents. Worst case scenario would probably be if my old 12'' laptop was taken. I no longer use it anyway. If TV, tablet and OH's kindle were taken I would simply pay to replace. Not found a need to insure contents and probably recouped the cost anyway over the last 30+ years. In the event of a total loss I would be very happy to receive a new caravan and pay to replace contents. The cost of a motormover replacement is included in the caravan coverage.

The CC offering is probably the best on the market and you pay the price for it . There are other good schemes, Caravan Guard is with RSA who are very reliable also NFU and SAGA get good reviews. We are now with C&CC who produce a similar policy for a lot less than CC although I do not think the insurers are quite so good and you have to decide at what level you want to go. I would always avoid the cheapest quotes as in general they have to be cutting corners to get that low although you might get a bargain.

I did look up Commercial Express, they are brokers and the policy is with LLoyd's underwriters. Personally I would avoid LLoyd's policies. They are safe but without knowing which underwriter is involved it is a bit of a gamble. LLoyd's is a collection of individuals working in syndicates and the service level can vary quite a bit and I feel their claims settlements can be mean with some syndicates.

We are also with Saga who are about half the price of CC on a Barcelona we bought new in 2015.  Other than in respect of European cover - which is an extra with Saga - and can be bought 'as and when' - the level of cover seems as good as the CC policy.  As Wildwood says, reviews indicate that their claims response is good and they have maintained their competitiveness for the last three years. I did shop around this year but none of the well known names came anywhere near Saga. Another attractive aspect of the Saga policy is that whereas they give discounts for as many security devices as you have, they only require that a minimum of one is fitted at any one time.

I have just got  quotes for our new van, and I was suprised at the hike from our 2004 Swift, The first quotes came back at around the £400 mark, but I knew it was going to be more, but then by pure chance the company who I have the old van insurance with rang me and said they had seen I was looking for quotes. So we went thru the motions and i was amazed that she came back with £60 more than we paid originally! Result!.

Anyhoo, she told me a couple of things like, ask what discount you get on different security devices. After I told I had Hitchlock, 2 wheelclamps and a hitchpost, and asked if I`d get more discount if a Alko wheel lock was fitted, yes she said.......... £4 !!

    Yep,............ £4

    Company is Ceta Insurance

For anyone taking out Caravan Insurance, might I suggest that they try Frank Pickles (Brokers) in Otley.  It's a local business to me, has been there for years, and isn't an anonymous 'call centre' but employs local people working in a lovely Georgian building in my home town. It's always been the place to go to for local people with 'difficult to insure' categories of any kind, and they almost always get you a good price.

I can't guarantee that they will beat any price, or even that they can insure you, but I'm keen to encourage people to try them as they are now advertising that they are specialists in Caravan Insurance, and for a local young person to join their specialist Caravan Insurance team! It's only a small town and employers like this need to be encouraged!

I absolutely agree.  We have had to claim when one of our previous caravans was stolen.  The CC were very efficient, fair and sensitive in the way they dealt with the claim.  It's worth the slightly higher premium, in my opinion.

We also found the CC to be about twice the price of Saga when it came to renewing the insurance on our year old Vigo. £220 as compared to nearly £400 with the CC. Obviously staying with Saga.

Not surprised as I always thought CC car insurances could be dear. I don't think it is through an individual company

We have twice had cars insured via the CC, using the "beat your renewal by £25" offer, both were the beat deals we could find at the time.

For us SAGA never work out well for car insurance, they always come out massively more expensive than other reasonable quotes, which I find strange.

And for home insurance, their standard sums insured are too low. Then when you ask for a higher amount the premium becomes really silly.

This is a brokers and the business is placed with an insurer. I would need to know who they were before saying one way or the other.

Shop around, I`ve always found the Club on the high side, but it is a quality product, no doubt they`ll be tales of woe about that comment. Try Comfort, Safeguard, Saga and the many others on the internet and you will soon get a ball park figure. I was looking for insurance for a trip to the USA last week and it ranged from £370 to £1000 for pretty much identical cover so it does pay to shop around.

I had the same issue.  Caravan club were very expensive for me when I first started.    I found several providers much cheaper but cover varied and I was concerned about service.  I found that the Camping and Caravan club was about the best for price and service combined.  What does annoy me is that they are like car insurers and hike the premium each year until I ring up and inform them I will be leaving at which point they do a "review " and find a better price!!
