Freedom Camping Club - who are they?

Hello.

My parents have received a letter from Freedom Camping Club, stating that their neighbour has applied to have an exempt campsite on his land (which seemingly has no limit on pitches?!).

I have never ever heard of them. Who are they? Does anyone have any experience of them, good or bad?

Thank you for your time.

I've heard them mentioned on CT before but can't tell you anything about them. I expect Google will have the answer.

To the best of my belief, a campsite exempt from the usual permissions can only be for 5 vans. Again, I expect Google will explain more.

Thank you. I did google them, but was just wondering if people had personal experiences.

I also can't fathom how they have campsites that are supposedly exempt with more than five caravans.

Not sure if that is correct. However is it not the case that such outfits can grant 5 caravans plus a number of tent pitches?

Very strangely they make the claim there is no limit to numbers despite working within the provisions of the Act.

I can see that for rallies ie up to 5 days duration there is no limit but for sites there is a 5 van limit, though not for specifically tents. I suggest any abuse of this is the very thing that puts the whole benefits granted by the Act under threat and hope our legal teams are looking after our interest. I would like to read the Club's comments on this.

Clearly they can apply for any number of units, but as I see it not under the exemption provision.

    Quoting:

We are authorised to administrate exemption certificates under paragraph 4, 5 and 6 of the First schedule, Caravan sites control of Development Act, 1960 and section 269 Public health act 1936.

    What we do

We issue exemption certificates to small non-commercial sites so they can operate as a campsite. There is no need for planning permission or a licence from your council. We assess your site, to ensure it is safe and suitable for use and then issue a certificate.

There is no limit to how many caravans, tents, motor homes you can apply to accept, however we do have criteria which will limit occupation by factors such as access, locality, impact on neighbours and the facilities you have available."

I have not looked in detail but noticed that one of their listed sites has 25 pitches for trailer tents, tents, yurts and some other tent type.

The C&CC sites provide to Accommodate up to 5 caravans or motorhomes, and 10 tents for a maximum of 28 consecutive days at any one time.
