The rate as I type is 1.1528.......so that is the rate you would get using a half decent credit card (with no fees), for erither purchases or cash withdrawals.

Last September we were having 1.15 to the £, ate out less and after 3 weeks found we had spent about the same as the year before, we considered this country this year but decided against it due to the freedom that France offers, we just book a crossing and head for the weather and as yet not found a full site, as in this country there's a good chance if don't book ahead you will struggle as we found a few years ago, and if your in Brittany and weather turn's bad in half day of stress free driving you can be in the vendi, that's something you'll struggle in this country to do.

With sites and fuel on the Continent being less expensive than  here, and food the same or less, we are not too bothered.

If  necessary we will be SKI-ing.  They have both done well in the last few years, so our turn now to treat ourselves.

Having started the year with a new car and some new furniture, we are enjoying our spending spree!

Not intending to stay away from the near continent and certainly not on cost grounds as we have not the time left to wait for any possible improvements to come.

Back in 2010 the rate was around 1.10 and three years later 1.13, so the current level is hardly unprecedented. Brexit is just a useful peg upon which to hang things.

We're usually on our way at this time of year to Spain for 12 weeks. However, Cath is still receiving treatment for an incurable immune system disease that keeps us UK-bound. We've been going to Spain and Portugal every winter for the last 12 years, apart from 5 months babysitting in the Alpes one year, and we hope that we may manage a shorter trip one more time.

In the meantime, we're off to Skegness on Sunday for three nights!

So the message is "Keep going while you can!"

Not sure what future plans are at the mo re the caravan but we are taking more and more hotel holidays abroad. As we are retired and can pick and choose we can find 'bargains'.

What I am seriously contemplating is driving down to Venice in the 2 seater with the top off in late May/June time. Campanile hotels etc en route are virtually same price as campsites but I agree some hotels eg Luzerne and Innsbruck are touching £100 a night. Last time we drove over Alps with roof off in the snow it was breathtaking. Big downside cost is we have to eat out everyday. However as my brother always reminds me, "You can't take it with you."

I agree 100%, sorry Chasncath you are unable to go abroad at the moment.  I hope you will be able to do so again in the future, all the best with the treatment.

I also agree about the fact that this is not a rehearsal; we have both had a serious health scare some years ago and since then we do what we want (within reason of course wink)

And in answer to AD's OP: we've got 2 crossings booked for this year, May/July and end of August/October, we still want to go "over the water" and certainly in view of the above we will continue to do so.

Fingers crossed for you ChasnCath from someone who is 10 years (approx) past his sell by date (also incurable but nobody has yet told my body so hush!).

Ironic really as it forced me to retire and spend more time caravanning which actually turned out to be very therapeutic.smile

So I hope things improve. Great to see you still getting out and about.

We are still going to Europe, probably a month in June /July and maybe late Aug/Sept. We may forgo June/July and go to Canada instead.

We also use our van at home, two cruises booked as well!

    Retirement is hell!

We are off to France this year and have made other trips previously. However, for us it is not about cost. Prior to getting a caravan 12 years ago, most of our holidays were abroad rather than here, as they were mostly under canvas and the weather was better. When we bought our first van we started staycationing more. Initially because I wanted to get used to towing the van in the UK,  and then because we stared to realise how many places in our own country we had not visited. Weather was not the issue it was in a tent either, we were dry and warm even in storm force winds in Scotland.💨☔️🌪

Staycation-no, vacation-yes. New Zealand(potentially), Europe & UK. The costs are what they are, they go up, they come down. Money is for spending not hoarding. I've been told Europe has nothing to compare to New Zealand, I'd dearly like to find outsmile

Hope you all have fun! It's a bit icy and windy down there, we hear, but sunnycool

Cath has recommended Camping Joan at Cambrils to Tony as a good seaside stop.

Wish we were with all you winter funsters!

as David asked about those touring (in the van) abroad, should i assume from your post that you're actually doing this.....isnt this a departure from the norm, for you...as i thought you only toured at home?

...or is it the IOW ferry?undecided

It's good to hear that so many of you will still be holidaying across the Channel, some for nice long breaks, and won't be letting the exchange rate or Brexit stand in your way. Good for you and long may you continue to holiday in the way that suits you best.👍🏻

    seems about rightsmile

im sure it will take more than this change in the euro rate or thoughts of Brexit to put most off.....the reasons why we do it are far too compelling..

I think it would need a lot to change ,to make people think twice about going overseas , as you say AD it's going to cost you more ,but you are probably going to save a bit here and a bit there to find the difference , it's like when fuel goes up we seem to find the money to keep driving

we were looking at going (dipping a toe) this year but my wife's heath has gone down hill and she is waiting for a hip replacement, but Europe is not going anywhere and we can go later , i'll just have to look at all your photo's

Hope you wife soon gets her hip replacement HD and you will be able to get to Europe next year.  Since our first trip in 2004 we have not looked back visiting 14 some we would not go back to but some others we love the scenery and friendly folks with some superb sites to visit cheaper than the UK with the help of good old ACSI Card.

Hope Chas and Cath can return to Europe soon too.

Husky.....hope your other half gets her op sorted out.

But you know, you can always 'dip your toe' by going just over the other side

In your location, it would be little different to a holiday in the UK......40 minutes easy ride on the Tunnel.

Just nip over, stay at one of the sites around Calais (there are numerous within a half hour drive) and see how it goes. There is plenty to explore, some great coastline, Boulogne, Wimeraux and even Calais itself.

Then, if you wish, try a bit further down th coast. I highly recommend Le Touquet.

Go on! Give it a go!
