BMW X5 towing experience
I have just purchased a BMW X5 and will be towing my Coachman pastice MPLTM 1630kgs so weight is not a problem but I have read that they suffer with a lot of electrical problems, my X5 is a 2007 E70 with a factory towbar,
Does anyone use this car for towing and what experience have you had with electrics or auto gearbox
just wondering do I sell it before I start towing with it or am I worrying excessively
Any replies would be great
Cheers

Hi bmwles
sorry can actually offer any help on this, but for what it's worth I was also asking questions along same lines as you quite recently. Didn't get a lot of feedback im afraid, most of the responses were offering the usual advice not to get an X5 but to go for a Landrover etc etc. Not really a lot of help!
from what I have been able to ascertain so far a lot defends on what sort of towing you intend, especially whether you will be pulling up very steep hills with a heavy van in peak summer months. I gathered that generally much better if you have a factory fitted tow bar as part of the installation was improvements in cooling etc
I "hang my boots up" later this year and have to buy myself a new car, so am still weighing up the pros n cons of what to get - but heart set on an X5 given that I have had a number of beemers, and currently drive an X1 (good tow car but just too light for what I need in the long term). I'll watch any replies you receive with great interest and if I stumble on anything which reassures you I will get in touch.

Hi My son in law has a X5 3.0d 2004 had it about five years and is very pleased with the car .He has covered about 40000 miles with it and it has covered 105000 in all He tows 1700/1800 kg van twin wheel, and he would replace it with the same but newer but has no plans to do that soon. One problem he had the engine was slow to turn over replaced battery but it was the starter motor. The auto gearbox has been trouble free and very good towing and has the standard cooling . In all very pleased.

I towed an 1800kg T/A for 4 years with a 2012 X5 40d, factory towbar and electrics. Auto gearbox. Fantastic tug. No problems whatsoever.
Prior to that I had an E class Merc estate, 3.0d. The Merc was very poor - unable to control the weight, shot the suspension and brakes.
Short of getting a Porsche Cayenne v8 (which I now have) you won't find anything better.
