i have just replaced my old Smax with the new updated 2016 Smax. My old one was a delight of a tow car and my Existing outfit has a MTPLM of 1500KG which was a synch to tow as the Smax carried so much weight.  We are now looking to replace it with the Cartagena TA which we are limited to as it is the only one with a fixed double bed of 4ft 8 inches wide as well as some other features, but also which has a MTPLM of 1717KG and the car has a mass in service of 1725KG. I know this is a nearly a 100% match but wondered if anyone could share any experiences of towing the Cartagena or similar.  In reality, due to the huge boot capacity of the SMax I always carry the heavy stuff in the boot, especially the awning and other weighty stuff so in reality with 2 adults and 2 kids of adult size, plus luggage the car weighs several hundred kilos more than 1725kg  when towing.

What are real world experiences of towing with such a match, and in particular am I likely to struggle with noseweight as I understand the Smax limit is 90 KG.  Thoughts would be much appreciated as the wife wants to have a look at some over new year !

Cheers.

When we got our Twin axle lunar we were towing with an 09 plate S max lunar mptlm was 1650, the smax towed it with ease. The only thing you need to bare in mind is you have no weight in the car to help if you get any problems but saying that the twin axle is more stable on the road.

Take it easy and if your experienced it should be ok. Alot of people asked me when we had ours if it was a legal match

nose weight was ok, packed stuff just rear of axles and got to within the 90kg limit

As someone who has been involved in investigating accidents I can only say the ones arising out of snaking were caravans near or over the kerb weight of the car and cannot get any where near advising it as many drivers only find out the match is poor too late.

The second point s that some cars are better tow cars than others so that any other car towing the same or a different caravan at similar weights is not a true comparison and you cannot draw any firm conclusions from it. Personally I would say the match is too risky as if you get it wrong the cost of correcting it is too expensive even if you do not have an accident. Have an accident with that ratio and if the insurer spots it then your renewal premium might be through the roof.
