as my daughter-law will be in Southampton General hospital in Jan/Feb for chemo  and radio therapy for Six weeks (lives in Guernsey), I would like to take the caravan down for 2to 3 weeks to be nearby. I live in Yorkshire and don't know the Southampton area at all. Are any club sites open or similar.  Is it feasible?

According to the UKCampsite website review section here is a selection of open all year sites near to Southampton. I have no personal experience of the sites but it might be worth looking at the links. I don't think there are any Club sites in that area open all year. Which hospital will she be in? Both the General and the Royal South Hants would have relatively easy access from the sites below. Google Maps will give a general idea of their locations in relation to Southampton.

There is a Forestry Commission site at Setthornes in the New Forest. Not too sure if that would be too far away for you.

I think you will not find a convenient CC main site to use; Hunters Moon requires driving regularly the A31 both ways, a long distance over its most agonising section, not a venture to be undertaken lightly.
The hospital is on the western part of the city so coming from that side is an attraction as at certain times the traffic can be awful. There is a CL off the A36, Black Hill Cottage, this has hard standings EHU and you can on the A36 pick up the X bus every 20 minute into Southampton, though not to the hospital direct. Alighting at Totton you can pick up a bus going via the hospital and I think they are every 20 minutes. You need to check my memory on the bus times and how they alter towards the evening.
Driving into Southampton General is okay but the parking at times can be challenging. There is a municipal CP [free] next to Sainsburys in Lords hill [on the route to the hospital]. From there there is a 10 minute interval bus service the extra mile right to the hospital.

I had exactly the same issue/reason you face attending somebody in the General for an extended period though living a drivable distance away. After real struggles with the hospital car park I used this municipal CP though I cycled up to the General, and either dined there or for a change used Sainsburys cafe.

I know of Black Hill Cottage but never used it ans accept it is a bit close to the A34 noise-wise. But its location, hardstandings and the bus service, plus going the other way and using Salisbury's P&R for “breaks” has a lot going for it. Salisbury P&R free on pensioners concession, and Salisbury has a lot of charm to unwind with.

I hope all goes well through this difficult period we know too well.
