The sun beat down on the dusty desert terrain. Not a cloud was in the sky. It was so hot, even the lizards stayed cooped up inside a rock or crack in the dry ground. Mirages lined the horizon, easily able to trick a human into their traps. Yet there was no-one around, except for two men.

The jeep trundled across the terrain, its screen coated in dust. The caravan it was towing was just as dusty. And the Jeep’s passengers were dirtier than both. They were stereotypical explorers – dressed in commando clothing, Stetson hats, sun burnt and extremely dusty. Also, they gave off a stench of week-old sweat. In their defence, they had been stuck in this vast desert for nearly a week and with critical amounts of fresh water, washing was a luxury they couldn’t afford. Suddenly, they halted.

“Why’ve we stopped?!” one exclaimed.

The driver looked at his friend solemnly. He said nothing but pointed at the fuel bar. Nothing left. They were stuck.

Jake, who spoke first, climbed out the car. He walked to their trusty Xplore and uncoupled it. Next he wound the steadies down and trudged in. Driver Roger followed.

Inside was pleasantly cool. The Xplore, despite its looks from the outside, was actually a new caravan. It had comfy beds and big storage compartments. The cupboards were nearly bare now, though. The fridge-freezer was full of water bottles but now of the 26, only eight were full. Both men downed a bottle.

Now what? They started to panic. Nobody knew they were there! Supplies were running low and with no transport, it seemed they were going to die there.

It was getting dark and they spotted lights in the distance. They seemed to be coming closer.

What was it?

Were they really alone?
