Day 2

We were up early, rain was expected and we wanted to be out and about before it arrived. Our first destination was Hexham and the market. It's nice and unusual to get free parking these days, well done Northumberland Council.

Hexham is a quaint old town, lots of historic buildings around but we were a little disappointed with the Market. This market has been going for hundreds of years but it was very, very small. I'm not sure if the market is busier on other days, the weekend for instance, but Tuesdays is no more than a dozen stalls.

The weather was still bright so we headed for the old Roman Fort at Vindolanda. What a super place this is, you don't have to be a fan of Roman History to appreciate this place, but as I am it was extra special. We arrived just in time for the guided tour which was very informative and really demonstrated how the Romans lived and how they shaped the future of Britain.

We visited the Coffee Shop for Coffee and a cream scone before heading for the Roman Army museum. If you buy a joint ticket for Vindolanda and the Army Museum you get a discount.

The museum was just has good, the highlight being a 3d film about the forts and life on Hadrians Wall.

We purchased a few things from the gift shop then headed back to the caravan to freshen up.

We then went for a little walk along the wall, made more entertaining as we walked through a field of Cows. They observed us nervously but they weren't as nervous as we were walking through them!

After our walk we had dinner at the Milecastle Inn, which was lovely, a very nice meal and the first time I have ever had Haggis!

The weather stayed nice all day, as I write the sun is still shining brightly but the temperature is beginning to drop, the skies are clear so it could be a cool night, I'm not worried though, we have a lovely warm duvet.
