Postcard from Cres 2013
We’re back at one of our favourite spots in Croatia, the small seaside town of Cres. It sits at the head of a western-facing sea loch which hosts fishing boats, small and large, small cruise ships and yachts. We gave a fuller description in last year’s Postcard from Cres.
The water is crystal clear and its temperature is still ok for swimming off the promenade or the fine-gravel beaches. The weather has become changeable with daytime temperatures having dropped from around 30C to the mid-twenties. We’ve had a few thunderstorms with more forecast for this coming week.
On Friday we had a pre-lunch swim to cool down after our morning cycle to the harbour for coffee: by the afternoon we were in the midst of a hailstorm which carpeted the site with ice. Cath was trapped in the shower block for 20 minutes while the hail battered van roofs and olive trees alike.
We’re at Autocamp Kovačine, less than a mile from the town along a winding promenade. The path also continues along the water’s edge through woods to other coves and beaches; however, you must beware the fkk (nudist section) of the camp in that direction and some pretty ghastly human shapes!
September/early October is a good time for caravanning in Croatia. This site has about a thousand pitches but right now it’s the pitches near the water’s edge that are occupied. We’ve managed to get a pitch only one row back from the sea from where we can watch the ships go sailing by.
Our new chums from Devon, Sarah, Mark and the delightful little Ella, left on Saturday so we’re back to being the only ‘Brits’ on the camp. There are a few Italians, Slovenians and Netherlanders on site, but the majority are German or Austrian, most of whom have a least one dog, of which many are toy dogs, all of whom bark at each other some of the time.
We’re keeping an eye on the weather outlook, which isn’t looking too great for this week, and may change our plan to go to Krk. Instead, we may cross to Istria and then head for Italy in search of the sun.

Enjoyed reading your travelogue, as usual! One of our daughters has just been back to the same area, no van involved but she said it's very easy to find nice self-catering accomodation. Do you book ahead for the sites or is there plenty of room?

H Brue! No booking required as lots of pitches at this of year although there is competition for pitches near the sea. There are lots of appartments for rent in every town and village we've visited: they're very popular.
After two storms last night, it's back to sunshine, barking and swimming before tonight's thunder and lightning!!
