The drive up from Millau took us past the great volcano and at the same time we could see snow on the tops of the mountains. We also saw some large birds of prey, not really sure what type but they looked like buzzards and eagles to an untrained eye.
We arrived quite early at Nevers which was handy as the soon to arrive rain meant we had time to visit the town just across the river from the camp site. I am always surprised at the size of the rivers in inland France and the Loire at this point was very wide. The town had some beautiful old buildings including a Cathedral dating back as far as the 6thC and the latest parts were still a very old 16thC. The beer in a town centre bar was expensive though at 2.80 euros for 25cl. That’s around £2.33 for just less than half of one pint!
The campsite was well located and the facilities, although few, were clean and tidy. Our only complaint was the pot washing water was not hot enough to do a proper job. There were lots of tent campers here, including some on cycles and motor bikes. Heavy rain that came later that evening must have been difficult for them and as I watched them packing away the tents the next morning I was glad I was in a motorhome.
We set off Sunday morning not knowing exactly how far we would get, it was Sunday and the roads would be quieter so we wanted to get as far north as possible to get away from the rain.
